The role itself varies across the 3 years with the first year being based in a training facility. In this period we complete exams and we also get to work on small aircraft. After this first year we go straight in the workplace where we work alongside other qualified engineers and get given various tasks around the aircraft.
I have learnt from scratch how to use various tools with absolutely zero experience and knowledge of. They train you up from the bottom. They also encourage you to be vocal and confident by carrying out presentations which helps with public speaking. I have also developed my time management in an industry which highly regards it as something important to have.
I enjoy working on the aircraft and there is always something new to learn. I like how everyone has a responsibility and there is no such thing as someone who gets carried by the team. I like getting hands on with things and it helps with truly understanding how an aircraft works.
The apprenticeship is very well structured as it starts of with basic modules which set a foundation before moving on to the complex ones. Although it does get very busy in the first year to keep up with everything they do offer support where needed. The hand skills learnt in the workshop also build you up to apply them in the hangar on the planes.
In the first year there is support offered mostly by the training provider but there is always access to our employer via email when needed. There are regular check ups from the employer where any feedback is taken on board and they are always there to provide support to us.
There is a lot of support. In the first year we are working in a facility where our trainers are there and we can always go to them for anything we need. Our 2nd and 3rd years we have help from our assessors who are in contact with us online and in person in some occasions
They provide us with the knowledge and the skills from scratch that we would need in the workplace. The qualification isn’t one that you just complete and you forget, rather they ensure that the things we learn can be applied everyday so that we keep it with us throughout our career
There are opportunities for us to get something extra out of our apprenticeship and our careers. There are presentations that we can hold to directors and managers in engineering for us to provide feedback on our course. This further boosts our career prospects and also allows to get involved in the bigger picture.
Yes
It is a very large company with many employees but it still recognises every employee and their work. They provide so much support not only in terms of our qualification but also things like mental health. The benefits that we have like flight discounts are also amazing for those that love to travel
Take the application process very serious as landing an opportunity at British airways is something that will stay with you a long time. Get to know the company beforehand and also ensure that your personality shines through. British airways values things like this more so than any other company out there
