Degree Apprentice Review

In the role a typical working week involves working in workshops or placements to develop skills and competencies within the business. Another day of the week is allocated to attending lectures and studying towards a degree in aerospace engineering at university. The role includes further opportunities to engage with the local community and further enrichment through outward bounds etc.

From a very limited experience with respect to practical skills, I have learnt how to use a variety of hand tools and maintenance techniques and how they are used in the wider industry. I have been given further opportunities to improve my teamwork, presentation and organisational skills to name a few.

I enjoy my programme, the work is very enjoyable and relevant and is structured in such a way to provide good progression. Surrounded by other apprentices the environment is positive and encouragement is given to network and get to know others. The programme meets my expectations and is what I expected.

The programme is very well structured, adequate time is provided in the induction period to familiarise yourself with the company and the contacts who are there to support you through the apprenticeship. Training is regularly provided on a range of topics. Designated coaches support us through the full 5 year programme.

The employer provides support on a variety of issues of day to day life and life within the employment. opportunities to engage with the unions are given and apprentices are eligible to access benefits provided by the business. Clear, concise and regular messaging are given should you require any help on a matter that may be an issue to you as an individual

The university/training providers have experienced tutors and a dedicated member of staff to link the business apprenticeship with the university allows the apprenticeship to run smoothly. the tutors make it clear that they are available to help whenever outside of lectures and activities outside of assignments are integrated into the programme in order to interact with others.

The qualification provided by the training provided very much goes hand in hand with the placement experiences of the apprenticeship placements. therefore where assignments are concerned there is information and support available from all the different professionals within the business and every day work can be associated with academic studies.

The company has taken steps to ensure that opportunities are available to interact with others and expand networks through various engagement activities, these include outward bounds weeks where all apprentices from different business units are able to interact with each other whilst building leadership, teamwork and communication skills. Virtual events even in the covid-19 pandemic have been provided to support this.

The company is very welcoming and there are a variety of different opportunities in different job roles available for multiple levels of apprenticeships. Therefore there is a very good chance that another friend even with different interests will be able to find a course that suits them best and will provide them with future career prospects.
