My role as an apprentice is to continuously learn new skills that will benefit me when officially working for Gatwick. At the end of the scheme I will be a fully qualified technician meaning that I could be working on an electrical task one day and a mechanical the next. It is very versatile which I am extremely happy about.
I’ve learnt loads during this first year, I’ve learnt hydraulic and phneumatical systems which is used commonly in a lot of systems, along with electrical tasks for example wiring all various types of sockets to a circuit board whilst having he knowledge to check if the continuity is accurate, ensuring that the components are safe.
I absolutely love this programme, this is all I wanted to do and I’m lucky enough to have one of the best engineering apprenticeships in the world. I’ve made loads of new friendships which have developed my social skills. I’d recommend this job to anyone interested in a practical job role.
My programme couldn’t be better organised, my manager constantly checks up with us ensuring that we are happy and focusing. The teachers at the first year at college often get in contact with our manager as-well informing him on how we’re doing. We are always told weeks before from Gatwick if there’s a change in our route so they are very good at keeping us updated.
My employer constantly checks up on us, which is very beneficial due to us always needing questions answered. He makes sure we know who to contact if not happy and updates us about the airport even tho we are currently at college, it makes us feel part of the family.
Our training provider ensures that we are all up to date, they won’t let anyone slack behind otherwise employers will be contacted. They want what’s best for us individually so they make sure work is set strategically in a way so its not depressing to look at and so we understand.
I think that it will benefit me due to me having better knowledge when referring to basic hand skills and general engineering aspects. Our training provider makes sure we understand the task fully before letting us work and try’s to let us get on with it by ourselves so we obtain the knowledge better.
We have sports teams that you can join if you’re interested e.g. football, basketball. Gatwick ensure that employees all feel like they’re part of the family, there is something for everyone. The team work aspect is most important for Gatwick due to teamwork being needed for everything around the airport.
Yes
You won’t be treated better anywhere else, the training you would get to obtain is unbelievable along with the social aspect. Everyone in each department knows each other whilst all getting on extremely well. There are amazing rewards at Gatwick along with discounts on train fares and flights. Gatwick is the place to work.
When applying for Gatwick you should just show your passion for engineering, that is all managers want to see. They want to see your character so don’t be scared just show them what you have to offer and why you would love to work for Gatwick airport. Don’t be afraid to share your achievements. Good luck.
