  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • I worked as a junior auditor. I was part of several teams performing audit services for a number of large clients. This involved interacting with client staff, obtaining listings, picking samples and obtaining documentation as supporting evidence for the figures given in the client TB. The placement was completely online.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I developed my IT skills. I learnt how to use more features of Microsoft excel and Google sheets in order to complete tasks more efficiently. I also developed skills regarding working online. I found that it is more effective to communicate with others through calls rather than email, and learnt correct etiquette for organising and making calls.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I enjoy some aspects more than others. The job can be enjoyable, I enjoy the area of accounting and working on Excel. Audit testing and the problem solving it involves can be very interesting. I also enjoy to social aspect of working in teams and meeting new people. Though, the hours can be long and tiring.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • The programme is very well structured. Training takes place before we join the firm properly, giving us advice and skills which we will use during the placement. Each joiner is allocated a career coach who is available to answer questions, provide support and act as a mentor. Each team I was allocated to had a manager who organised the team.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • PwC provide a lot of support for employees. I was allocated a career coach who was able to answer any questions I had, e.g. regarding resourcing. Within the engagement teams, each junior member is paired with a senior who provides coaching and guidance on the work. A manager is also allocated to the team who is able to answer questions.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • Each student is allocated a personal tutor. Both the tutors and course leader are accessible via email to answer any questions we may have regarding placement or university. My personal tutor reached out to me during the placement to check how I was doing and gave me advice on finding accomodation for the next academic year.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • My qualification has given me the basic knowledge I needed to work as an auditor. Accounting and finance modules have prepared me to assess the client's accounting treatment of almost all areas I was required to test. The audit and assurance modules also gave me knowledge of what types of testing to expect when looking at different areas.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • The ability to participate in social activities has, understandably, been limited by COVID restrictions. The firm still makes a clear effort to organise social activities. For example, management encouraged the organisation of virtual audit meals in which the team orders takeaways, eats and talks on a call. They also encouraged weekly team quizzes. This was important in maintaining a social element to the job.

  • Yes


  • 9b. Why?
  • For someone who wants to qualify as a chartered accountant this is a very good route. This structure of the programme allows students to learn what is needed to pass the professional exams in a university environment. The integration with the placements allows students to put their knowledge into practice. The level of support provided helps students transition into a work life.


  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to PwC?
  • PwC has a very clear philosophy. Their cultures and values are a key part of how they assess both applicants and employees. It is important to become familiar with what the firm looks for in employees. Being able to provide examples of these skills is a key part of the interview process.
