I coordinate careers events for schools in our county. This involves liasing with teachers to find out what they need and sort out the logistics of the events. I then have to source Volunteers to attend the events. After the events I gather feedback from all involved to ensure a better experience for the next participants
Through this job I have mostly built on skills I’ve developed through previous jobs and college such as teamwork, communication and resilience. Some skills such as professionalism and coordination I have learnt as part of this role. Ultimately this workplace has been a completely new environment for me and with that comes new skills.
I enjoy the university side. However, I have been in my work place for 3 years and not experienced much progression despite my ability. I think this is due to my workplace being a small not for profit. It is frustrating that I don’t have as much experience as others on my course.
I think the structure of the programme is good and the organisation. However some of the lecturers and module leaders maybe forget our position as apprentices and can disrupt the structure and organisation. The majority of staff are very helpful and respond to queries quickly and effectively. They’ve been especially helpful during the pandemic.
Despite various warnings from the university, my employer has not adhered to the 20% off the job training that is part of our contract. I believe this puts me at a disadvantage compared to other students and compromises my worklife balance. Otherwise they are supportive and help with essays when I ask.
Most of the module leaders respond within 1 - 2 working days, which is great. Some are even happy to arrange 1-1 calls to go through the content and support you. The only shame for me is that I’m not able to access in person university resources as often as I’d like.
The content of the qualification is excellent, however sometimes it is not applicable to me in my current role as I am not in a Management Role. I can appreciate though how the knowledge would compliment a management role and we discuss the information as a group so we can compare and contrast experiences.
At work we do have the occasional team building days. We also hold a weekly soup club, where members of staff take it in turns to cook a soup for the whole office for lunch. There isn't many teams/activities that take place outside of work hours, due to caring responsibilities etc.

I would definitely recommend the apprenticeship route to those individuals who know they are intelligent enough to pursue a degree, but do not want to be loaded with debt. I think an apprenticeship offers you great flexibility to gain experience as well as qualifications and puts you ahead of other university graduates.
Have a look around at all the different companies and organisations that offer the apprenticeship you're interested in. Make sure you are happy to pursue the apprenticeship route too as you don't get the "university experience" and have to be a bit more mature to fit in in the professional environment.
