My role is to cook behind the line. I cook dishes to order as-well as prepping the food before the service begins. I have to know what goes into the dishes, how they are presented and get them out in the expected wait time. I have to clean during and after service, know about allergens and cross contamination , as well as company procedures.
I have learned many new skills. I have learned how to multitask , use knives correctly, cook dishes to the right temperature ( for example a steak being rare or medium well) and even how to fillet/ de bone a chicken as I work in a rotisserie. I have built up skills I already had also such as good communication skills which are very important in the kitchen.
I enjoy my programme very much. I am Always pushed to do my best and always praised by my trainer and my workplace when I have done well. I always feel motivated to exceed my goals and this makes me enjoy my learning and training. My trainer always sets out my learning in a way that doesn’t feel like a mountain and a struggle.
My programme is very well structured. It’s always set out with dates and end point dates which I am aware of, giving me end goals and targets. These dates and expectancies make me feel much more organized, as well having portal online which sets everything out in a format which is very easy to understand.
My employer hasn’t always been the best with support. She will print things out and give me dates of when I need them but she will not always give me advice and fill out paperwork where it’s needed. In some ways in the past she has treated me like a qualified member of staff with expectancy’s, however my assistant manager has supported me in areas where my employer has not.
My training provider always pushes me to do my best but always make sure I understand and comfortable with the work set. She makes end goals very clear and always answers questions when I need assistance. She praises me as well as letting me know where I may need work in areas, this helps me be the greatest chef I possibly can.
My qualification has taught me many things that I can use in the workplace. I can learn and watch videos online that I cannot necessarily experience in my workplace, for example filleting a fish or making bread, we do not do however I’m still able to learn this through my training provider.
We do not have social activities in my workplace however we do have an online system of learning which allows our workplace to compete against each other in competitions. This app allows us to socialize with each other whilst learning so I personally think it’s very efficient however I would like to have extra curriculum activities involved in my workplace.
Yes
Marstons are always very supportive with my learning and help me work around any issues in the workplace. They are usually very quick to respond to any issues and any needs that I have. However I have found I have had to supply my own uniform and equipment in the past which isn’t a major issue however it would be nice if it was supplied.
I would advise them to be professional in the workplace as I have come across employees in the past who are not and it has affected others work performance. I would advise them to do any qualifications they could while working for Marstons since they are very supportive with training programs and learning.
