  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • My role as a production chef, the main part of my job is cooking. Once an order comes in, depending on which section of the kitchen I'm assigned to, I will cook to complete that order. I also clean and sanitise my station and complete daily cleaning of other areas of the kitchen.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I've learnt a lot of hands on skills like proper cutting/slicing techniques, the different types of steak and the best way to cook them to the customers preferences and overall better communication within the kitchen environment. From the online learning i've picked up skills such as proper cleaning technique!

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I thoroughly enjoy the programme! the online learning gives me a great opportunity to expand my knowledge beyond practical skills, learning about more then just the food and how to prepare it, but also where it comes from, the nutrients, and more about business operations that also directly apply to my job role that i might not have considered important before now.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • I believe the programme is well structured and I receive any and all support I need from both my boss and my work coach! There is constant communication between the three of us and I feel safe to raise any concerns to either of them. My work/coursework balance is great, and if I feel confident in being able to complete both to my best ability without them directly affecting the other in a negative way.

  • Constant and wonderful support! My boss takes a personal interest in my progress and we're in constant communication about any extra support I may need or if I that I need more practical experience in one area of my study then they do their best accommodate that. They work my rota around any meetings I might have.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • I receive a great deal of support from my training provider! Constant encouragement and belief, always checking up to make sure that I'm doing well and am happy with the amount of work I've been set and the deadlines for that, and offering me any and all feedback to help improve my learning or prep for the final exam :)

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • I feel like I've applied all of the knowledge I have picked up from the online training to my work directly. Parts of my training that don't directly apply to a practical skill still help me to improve my work by making me think and consider the way that I or my company do things and be even more productive.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)

  • 9a. Would you recommend Marston's to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • It's a great company that respects their employees and always tries to do their best to look after us. They are eco conscious and charitable, as well as socially conscious. My favourite thing is that Marston's have such a large support system for their staff, those with mental health issues have multiple support systems provided by the company and it just shows they really care.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Marston's?
  • Go into your interview and just put your best foot forward, if you are passionate about the job you're applying for then that will be recognised and supported in an ever changing environment. If you have any concerns, talk to someone within the company, senior staff members will have access to multiple resources that can really give you a hand if you're struggling.
