  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • I manage a number of client portfolios, completing tax compliance reviews and ad hoc consultancy work answering client queries. I also review the work of junior team members on a regular basis to ensure consistency in work delivered by our team. I am the key point of contact for a large number of my clients.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • yes, i have developed my time management and organizational skills considerably since leaving school. I have also learnt to delegate and manage others and improved these skills over the time on my apprenticeship. Time management is key in this role and staying on top of the heavy workload, juggling this with study time.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I mostly find the programme enjoyable, it is what i expected and gives me a big advantage in the field of work. However it can be stressful, as we have a number of important clients and deliverable deadlines are tight, balancing this with the exam requirements for the qualification can be very tough.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • the structure of the training is good, it is spread out over a period of time designed to allow for breaks between study blocks. Training is good and thorough both by the tuition providers as well as internal job specific training. We also get lots of support with the work if needed.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • We do receive lots of support when asked, however we can occasionally be overburdened from time to time when going through busy periods or working to tight deadlines. It can be difficult to push back on tasks, but everyone supports each other and understands that the programme structure has to come first and will work around issues together.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • The materials and study resources are very good, they are clear and logical and provide a good level of detail to allow us to feel prepared for exams. There is also tutor support available where required through contact a tutor options on our online resource pages which can provide one on one support.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • The accountancy qualification is not directly linked to my job role which is very specific and tax focused. This means that there is only smaller areas where I can actually put the things i have learnt on my qualification into practice. I have taken a slightly different route now and opted for a joint qualification which is more relevant to my job role so there are options out there to be flexible

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • i get involved with recruitment events regularly to encourage people to come to EY and talk about my experiences in the job role. There here are other activities on offer, however i am not currently in a position to take these up but we have a lot of networks and activities ongoing that anyone can join.

  • 9a. Would you recommend EY to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • It is clear that EY really do care for their staff and look to put us first, including our wellbeing and professional development. The level of flexibility and understanding around home working, planning around exams and study commitments is great. The teams are all really welcoming and it feels easy to settle in.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to EY?
  • Be yourself, do your research, decide which team you want to join, which service line and get a good understanding of what each part of the business does before applying/ It's important to make sure you're prepared to work hard though, as it can be tricky juggling time and commitments!
