In the TNCC, I undertake tasks set by my managers and work on projects that are occurring in the TNCC. I also have to complete University work from Aston towards my foundation degree as well as training for National Grid. The training can be at National Grids training centre or virtually.
National Grid has taught me many new skills in such a short space of time. This is due to National Grids extensive training they offer. Skills I have learnt include networking effectively, presenting clearly, better time management, better work management, improved health and safety knowledge and a wide range of technical knowledge/skills.
Considering about 90% of my time at National Grid has so far been completely remote, the programme has been incredibly well managed with some great people making the programme very enjoyable. The great people on the programme make it very enjoyable even remotely and there is always someone to talk to when in any need of a chat.
Considering the programme has been largely remote working, organising was never going to be an easy task. However the new talent team has done an excellent job of organising many interesting and useful virtual teams courses as well as different e-learnings combined with the work at Aston University. There are always update meetings and an updated calendar should you ever need assistance.
The support from National Grid has been really great again considering the remote working. The new talent team ensure that we are getting all the support we need and will continue to check in with us if we need any help or are struggling. We have also many different staff members we can go to should we need support whether this be a mentor, line manager or the HR teams. National Grid has a company has a very supportive attitude.
Aston University provide a a very high standard learning programme when delivering the Electricity Power Systems Foundation Degree. Allocated into blocks of 1-2 weeks per module, the lectures are incredibly knowledgeable and more then happy to take any questions throughout the lectures. Most of the work has been virtual but that hasn't seem to impact the quality of learning.
Especially in my department of the TNCC, the learning we have done with Aston University so far has been very beneficial to my role and really gives an understanding behind key concept that form the Electricity Network. Specifically work on transformers has given me a much greater understanding of the subject and is easily compatible with my day to day work.
National Grid also has something organised for extra-curricular activities. With remote working a lot of this has been moved virtually but there have still been many extra classes we can attend on a range of different subjects. There is also many STEM volunteering opportunities that we can easily take part in.
Yes
My time at National Grid has been amazing and really enjoyable. I have learnt so many new things and developed many new skills that I could not have done anywhere else. The people at National Grid are very knowledgeable and helpful and will always offer there support to you if you have any questions or issues. Despite the remote working, I have already made some great friends.
National Grid pride itself on their high standards and values. It needs to be clear that you are willing to maintain these standards and will be a role model for the company. National Grid is a very diverse company with a lot of varying backgrounds and skills, ensure that you show of the skills and qualities that make you who you are and show this during an onboarding process.
