Engineering Technician Review

Currently, I am working in the Metrology Department under the 'Inline measurement team'. This means I help maintain the equipment and ensure that all measurement data is reliable. Additionally, I help maintain the measurement cell. This means I use robot programs in conjunction with PLC operations to calibrate and optimise the measurement system.

I have developed many skills during my time with the BMW Group. For example, I have learnt basic Robot Operation skills and PLC Operation skills. I have also learnt how to use specialist software in conjunction with measurement software. Additionally, I have developed as person. I have become more confident as a person as well as expanding my communication skills in the business.

I enjoy the apprenticeship programme a great deal. Every day I am learning new skills as well creating new relationships with new people around the business. There are a tremendous amount of opportunities out there with new technologies being implemented into the business. The best thing to do is to take every opportunity you can.

The apprenticeship is well structured. The first year is completed in Swindon College where you develop basic engineering skills and complete a Level 3 Qualification. The second and third year are completed on site at work and at the BMET campus to complete a foundation degree. The final year is completed on site at work and at University to complete a full degree (topped up from the foundation degree). In the final year you also complete an 'End Point Assessment' to complete the apprenticeship.

There is a great deal of support for apprentices. Whether that be from the apprentice managers in both Plant Swindon and Plant Oxford. There is also support from the colleges and or universities to help complete the academic work. There is also support from an assessor when it comes to completing the EPA.

There is an adequate amount of support from the training provider (college/university). There is help available from the training provider to support learning activities and assignment work. My learning is in Birmingham and I live near Plant Swindon, this can be challenging to communicate with lecturers unless communicating face to face.

The qualifications I have been completing at college/university are very relevant to the work place. The qualifications give a great awareness about tools and processes that can be used in the workplace. There is also opportunity to learn new skills such as using CAD programs and CNC programs. Actually gaining the qualifications will go a long way in my career.

Every year, there is a Mountain Challenge to take part in. The challenge is to walk so far and reach certain landmarks that will in turn, award points. To win the challenge, you must win the most amount of points. The event is a great opportunity to make new connections.

There are an amazing amount of opportunities that will come up that will allow you to be a part of a great team and organisation. There are a great amount perks to take advantage of including a company car scheme. The workforce is incredibly friendly and supportive when helping you learn new skills.

If you choose to apply for a role within the BMW Group, be prepared for the workload that comes as an apprenticeship. There is a lot of work to complete in the first year and fourth year in particularly. The first year can be a steep learning curve, but it shouldn't be a problem if you are willing to out the time in.
