  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • Day to day my role as a FTTP (fibre to the premise) engineer includes connecting customers to the fibre optic network on behalf of their service providers. These provides will either be fed OH (overhead) or UG (underground). With fibre being the future of the network the majority of the work is replacing the old copper network to the fibre optic.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • Prior to joining Openreach I worked as a contractor on the Openreach contract. This provided me with many skills to develop within my current role. I was previously a copper engineer so I have definitely learnt new skills to further in my career and also developed on many existing skills.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I extremely enjoy the programme I am on. As the current job I am doing is something I have been very determined to get into from a very young age. So to have the chance to complete an NVQ as well as working in the job that I love is an added bonus.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • The programme is very well organised with a structured plan for dates of designated days to work on my NVQ. Which is a massive relief as it takes the stress off from trying to balance work time and time to work on my NVQ. I have been well informed from day one about the structure of the programme.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • I receive a very good amount of support from my employer as they allow work days specifically designated to allow me to work on my NVQ. They also keep me informed with regular emails about upcoming NVQ days. There are also many people available for me to contact if I am ever in need of help.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • I receive a very good amount of support from my training provider as they keep me informed with regular emails about upcoming NVQ days. There is also many documents that have been provided to assist me with my NVQ. There are also many people available for me to contact if I am ever in need of help.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • It really improves my work performance as it motivates me and provides me with a lot more on the job information and company background to assist me within my future career. It has taught me a lot about my role and options I have within my company, Which held me perform better within my role.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • There are many activities within the company to get involved in. There are also schemes that you can get involved in such as: cycle to work scheme. There is also a social networking site for employees to use called ‘workplace’ this allows employees to interact with each other and set up events for others to see and participate in.

  • 9a. Would you recommend BT Group to a friend?
  • Yes


  • 9b. Why?
  • I would highly recommend working for BT as it is truly a job for life. With many opportunities to progress and try different roles within the company makes it very appealing. There is also lots of help and support within the company, it makes you feel comfortable within a safe working environment.


  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to BT Group?
  • I I would encourage others as much as I can to apply as it is a excellent place to work that offers so many opportunities and a brilliant place to progress. I would advise to try their hardest as it an opportunity that you shouldn’t let go to waste.
