I work with a team of engineers and hydraulic modelers designing solutions to waste infra flooding problems. This includes investigating the causes of flooding problems through surveys, desktop investigations and site visits. I also create solutions using hydraulic modelling software and draw up these proposals into plans using AutoCAD Civil 3D.
I have developed a number of new skills whilst completing my apprenticeship, these include: 1. Knowledge and understanding of engineering principles 2. Improved communication skills in the work place and developing professional relationships 3. Improved IT skills through use of engineering tools such as AutoCAD and ICM Inforworks (hydraulic modelling software)
I have thoroughly enjoyed my time on the apprenticeship program. During my time on the program I have enjoyed the challenging work and tasks that I have been given. My team and other apprentices have been very helpful and supportive, these are values that are company wide in my experience.
The program has been very well organised and structured. When I started I took part in a two week induction along with all of the other new apprentices that year at the head office. This helped me to build relationships with the other apprentices that made starting work easier as I already know people in a similar situation to myself. The training and education part of my program has been very organised and ran very smoothly. And any problems that I had I was able to contact HR who were very helpful
My manager has been very helpful during my apprenticeship, they have given me different tasks that have allowed me a wide range of experiences. The HR team have been very supportive and are in regular contact with the apprentices. When I started I was also given a mentor in my team and an apprentice mentor who was already at the company.
My training providers have been very helpful whilst I have been working towards my qualifications. During my time at college where I studied for my HNC in Construction and the built environment I was given all the resources and support that I needed, extra support was available should I have needed it too.
My qualifications have given me a greater understand and greater level of knowledge that I am able to use and take back to my work. My training and education has improved my engineering knowledge and skills and this has greatly helped me with my work. For example i have been on AutoCAD training and this has resulted in the drawings i now produce being to a much higher standard than before.
Severn Trent has provided a number of extra-curricular activities that I have been able to take part in. Every employee is encourage to make use of their two Community Champions day where they can sign up to take part in a day of volunteering that lets us give back to the communities we work in.
Yes
From my experience Severn Trent has been a very good place to work and I feel lucky to have started my career at such as great company. There is a very friendly culture and lots of hard working employees all with the same goal of providing our customers with one of life's essential resources.
I would advice others applying to Severn Trent to be themselves during the application process and on during any interviews or the assessment day. Make sure that you have some relevant experience such as work experience as I think this will go a long way in helping your application and showing that you want to be an engineer.
