  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • My role is to support the oncology analytical chemistry team. I have completed rotations in RP-HPLC purification, MS and NMR so support the purification, identification and quantification of novel drug compounds. Currently I support the NMR team in the structural confirmation and absolute purity assessment of chosen analytes.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I have learnt an array of new skills and laboratory techniques and am able to operate high level instrumentation, analyse data output to provide reports/feedback to chemists and troubleshoot minor issues on certain pieces of equipment. I have also been able to improve my presentation/public speaking skills.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I thoroughly enjoy my apprenticeship as I have the ability to have a meaningful impact upon the oncology department in the delivery of novel drug compounds with the aim to eliminate cancer as a cause of death. The work is varied and interesting and colleagues kind, supporting and intelligent.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • My programme is well organised with a designated study day for university work and has been well managed and supported by my manager. Training for new roles within the workplace is excellent with a designated mentor for each rotation. Work rotations are an excellent opportunity to increase business exposure.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • Every colleague in the business I have encountered has been incredibly supportive and helpful with any questions/problems I have had. The attitude of all employees is exemplary with easy access to support in terms if manager, mentors and other colleagues.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • Unfortunately my training provider has shown themselves to be inadequate in terms of support and general attitude towards their students. Course leaders are generally helpful but let down by their counterparts. Learning is not as interactive as hoped leading to a lack of enjoyment of this work.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • As my job roles is specific to analytical chemistry, not all modules are link well to the workplace but I feel the knowledge gained sets me up for wide variety of future jobs. Some information has proved incredibly helpful in being able to understand more complex job procedures and theory.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • My workplace has a designated organisation for the younger science generation in which events/optional training/webinars/sports/networking events and more take place. Currently many of these take place online due to COVID but will resume in person in the near future. Its a great way to meet people.

  • AstraZeneca is an amazing place to work with an incredibly supportive environment. You can access and regularly use cutting edge technology to support a meaningful cause and have a positive effect on many peoples lives.


  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to AstraZeneca?
  • Be honest and believe in yourself! Think about why you want the position and let your interviewers know. It is helpful to research the company values before any interview/application as many questions centre around this.
