  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • My day to day role involves me organising and fulfilling engineering work packages to the best of my ability. As I am not trade specific, I am involved in all kinds of work and will be required to carry out a lot of administration tasks and documentation tasks, which are all complex.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I have carried out different training in multiple areas of engineering to a basic level and I have also completed my academic qualifications for my apprenticeship. I have completed many courses internally as well regarding different areas of business conduct. I have also been able to develop my interpersonal skills and how I communicate with others.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • The Apprenticeship Programme has been relatively enjoyable on the whole. I have been able to develop a large number of skills and work with many different people from different levels and backgrounds. However, there is a lack of clarity on a lot of areas surrounding submission of work and the deadlines for apprenticeship completion.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • The first 3 years of the programme have been excellently organised and I feel I was able to follow the general direction and deadlines. However, in the final year, whilst the times have drastically changed, it has been very difficult to know what is expected of us and when all our work is to be submitted.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • I would say we receive a decent amount of support from our employer. Not only do we get paid well for our work but we also have plenty of support through occupational health, our unions and our pension investment plan. If there are any questions that we have, we can always ask the managers.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • We received as much support as we can providing that the support is there to be utilised. However, due to the coronavirus we are unable to receive much support at the current time. This hasn't been overly detrimental to us as a group as we are on the verge of completing the programme.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • I would say that the qualifications we receive are good at preparing us for some of the aspects of our but it is tough to replicate the work environment. There are different skills that we are not able to learn through the qualifications such as time management, work ethic and organisation.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • There are not any sports groups to get involved with in our work place which is disappointing. There are facilities that are available for the use of employees such as the swimming pools, the gyms and the football pitches but there no official groups. Staff do however create their own clubs and sports groups without company aide.

  • 9a. Would you recommend Babcock to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • I would reccomend Babcock to a friend because in Plymouth and the surrounding area that are not many employers who can take someone straight from school and provide them with as much freedom as they do. The company is, generally, well run and I have made lots of friends since beginning work here.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Babcock?
  • The advice that I would give to anyone applying to Babcock would be to network as much as possible and work constantly to develop your training portfolio. I have been able to work with many different people who are in higher positions than myself but I have also been able to attend courses and gain knowledge of a wide array of different areas.
