In my role as an apprentice at babcock, I am training to become a qualified engineer. Therefore I work 5 days a week. I study city and guilds wich is undertaken once a week. For the other 4 days I am learning the skills in engineering such as diesels, machines or hand fitting.
Yes, since beginning the apprenticeship it’s been all about learning and undergoing activities I am not familiar with. The apprenticeship has benefited me and taught me many skills which I use at work aswell as at home on a day to day basis. Aswell as learning I have also developed skills I knew prior to the apprenticeship.
I Enjoy the programme very much. Like everyone I get down days where I’m not up for it as much as I am the day before etc.. However on the whole the apprenticeship is very good and fun as you are learning, making new friends and getting paid to do the job you want to do.
The programme is very well organised such as specific times, locations etc. With the programme I am on you must also undertake workshops every now and then on specific topics such as gambling awareness to help you in the near future and what to do. Therefore I think the apprenteceship is very well structured.
My employer is always keeping in touch with everybody within the apprenteceship, wether that is physically coming to the college to have a look around and talk to us or over email. My employer is constantly putting us on workshop days to help us when it comes to when the experience is needed.
When working towards qualifications, such as c&g we do receive support. We have lessons every Monday to get us towards the qualification, however in certain circumstances it’s felt like the training providers can get very angry and fed up and just deliver a not so well lesson for the class
Certain lessons through my c&g help me lots when it comes to my role. Such as using measuring equipment, identifying what material is what and so on. Therefore I feel like the lessons delivered from my training provider definitely is and advantage when it comes to performing better in my role.
At college, not so much, well I’ve never heard of these clubs. I know they exsist however it’s not really advertised towards us in the engineering block. However I do know that when In the dockyard working from Babcock, there is many clubs you can undergo and train for.
Yes
Because Babcock is one of the best apprenticeships possible in plymouth. It is a very fun and challenging job wich brings the best out of you. You are always learning new skills and having fun and best of all getting paid for this, therefore I would recommend to anyone wanting an apprenteceship.
To keep your head down and get though all the work given to you, including the paperwork as that is what catches up on you if you just leave it and don’t take any notice. Always keep track of what your doing and always be there on time as that is when problems start to occur.
