My role as an apprentice is to shadow the maintenance team and get involved in any jobs that they carry out such as going to breakdown on the line or if there are any jobs that need to be carried out within the workshops, this could be welding, milling or turning.
I have learnt many new skills within my time as an apprentice so far, skills such as, 3D printing and 3D scanning which is a vital skill as the technology is becoming more and more advanced. i have also learnt some new skills that are very hands on, for example, welding, turning, milling and how to make and electrical circuit like a ring main.
this apprenticeship is very enjoyable as it is hands on and you are always learning something new because you don`t just do the same job all the time, as an apprentice you are shown many different skills as well as different training opportunities that the company will put you through.
on a whole i would say that this apprenticeship is well organised in the sense that before every placement we go on there is an introduction meeting with the training manager and placement manager so you are able to go through what you are going to be doing, how long the placement is for etc. you will also have an in dialogue every so often with you training managers, this is where you can go through any issues you may have as a group.
i have so far received very good support from both the B-met team and the BMW team, they are always happy to help with anything you may need and if there is an issue they will work hard to overcome it. they are also very supportive if you have any learning disabilities like dyslexia because they offer you extra classes and workshops.
within the first year you will receive a lot of support as you will spend the whole of the year with your B-met tutors within the workshop and training school, as you get to your second year although you aren't in the training school and out on the shop floor this doesn't mean that there is a lack in support.
i feel that my qualification has a big part in my role because we learn a lot of skills that will eventually be transferred over when it comes to working in the factory full time in the maintenance team, especially the skills that you lean in the training school workshop.
as well as your B-met training the company also puts you through various other training days which will give you skills and other qualifications that will then be under your name, such as, ladder training, health and safety training, risk assessment training and confined space training. not only this but you will also get training courses to do online for things like 3D printing which i have done in my second year withing the innovation placement.
Yes
Because it is an amazing experience to learn new things and get your hands dirty as well as the fact that you can learn and get paid for doing so. within the company there are also many benefits such as the car scheme and pension plan that you wont find anywhere else at such a young age.
when you apply it may take a long time for the company to get back to you with an answer so don't think that because you haven't heard anything from them this means you haven't got the job. i would also say just keep practising for interviews as well as practising and keeping up to date with some maths questions because they will test you in the application stage.
