  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • As a part of my role, I work on a sewage treatment site dealing with the sludge to produce cake to be sold to farmers as well as gas which is made into energy and then sold to the national grid. As an operator, we must ensure that the site is running as well as it should by completing daily checks and tests as well as an element of problem solving when things aren't quite working as they should.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I have learnt a lot of new skills since working for Severn Trent. For a start, I now know a lot more about the process of dealing with sewage from the point it arrives at our site as well as how it gets here. As a part of the job, you have to work as a team so I have been able to improve on that also.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • So far I am really enjoying my time on site. I feel like I am learning a lot and that I am getting along with the rest of the team really well too. As for the college site of things, we are required to attend the Make UK hub in Birmingham for the college course. I fell like so far these have been very unorganised with constant timetable changes.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • As mentioned in the previous question, the college side of the program does not seem to be very organised. Since starting we have had multiple timetable changes and haven't really been kept in the loop as to what is happening. This has lead to things being cross book and even missing out on some of the college learning. As for working on site (Severn Trent), everything has been really well organised. All of my PPE was available on my first day and I have been allocated time to complete any outstanding college assessments and training requirements.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • I feel like I receive a lot of support from my employer. If there is ever anything I need, I know 100% that I am able to go to my manager, senior tech or even other operators for support whether that be for help on site or assistance with any of my college work.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • So far, due to a lot of timetable changes, I have not really spent that much time at college and therefore haven't had much time with my training provider. Most of the lessons so far have been done online and therefore feel like it is difficult to fully answer this question.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • I feel like most of the knowledge I have picked up on has all been through working on site, it is therefore due to actually being on site and spending time with the other operators that I feel I am able to perform better in my role rather than from what we are learning with the training provider. While the things we are learning is mostly relevant, I personally prefer being on site as I feel I learn more rather than being in a classroom.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • So far, I haven't got involved in any extra-curricular events at work however I believe that this is something that they do look to offer. Recently, I have been receiving emails in relation to volunteering with local communities therefore it is something that they do offer however I have just not got involved with any as of yet.

  • 9a. Would you recommend Severn Trent to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • Overall, I feel like Severn Trent is a very good company to work for and I feel like the work we are doing is very rewarding. Also, with the opening of the Severn Trent Academy, I believe most of the college work will begin to be completed in house and therefore have more relevance to the role.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Severn Trent?
  • Severn Trent is defiantly a worthwhile company to be working for with great opportunities and rewards for all of its staff. Makes sure to do your research on the job you are applying for and give it your all as it is defiantly a company you could look to build a career for life with.
