As a Learning mentor, I provide help and support to pupils who are experiencing difficulties & barriers in their learning due to social, emotional or behavioural problems or other external issues. I am helping pupils to overcome problems that are affecting their learning with intervention sessions ranging from 4, 6 & 8 weeks- varying how often & how long based on the individual child. I also deal with attendance, liaising with parent, external professionals & after school club.
I have learnt how to take minutes on professional meetings with external agencies working along side vulnerable pupils and their families. I have learnt how to use a database called SIMs which schools use to store pupils/staff information securely. I am developing on my sympathy & empathy skills & using them correctly. I have also been taught about safeguarding & child protection.
I really enjoy working with the pupils I do as each pupil & situation is different. I believe the challenge is there for both myself & the pupil & supporting them & gaining a positive outcome is the best feeing ever & ever so rewarding.
The programme is set out very clearly & my tutor has explained it well.
I receive a lot of support from a number of people and I truly would not have accomplished by level 3 STLS without them let alone progress onto another apprenticeship.
I receive monthly sessions with my tutor as well as on the tap email/phone support from her. I know I can get the support I need whenever I may require it.
It gives me the structure & answers I need whilst physically doing my job. I know with the learning I have...I can preform better in my role & have something to fall back on as guidance.
Yes, they have social events which is optional. They also have extra training such as safeguarding & prevent training.
