My role is to create both 2D outputs and 3D models of sections or parts of the ship. As a mechanical designer I am tasked with focussing mainly on systems that include pipes, pipe clips, ventilation and much more. I can also be tasked with approving things and running checks to ensure that everything is done correctly.
I have mainly developed on existing skills massively throughout my apprenticeship so far. I have probably developed my social skills the most and learnt to communicate more with other designers as it makes the work a lot easier. In school I was very self contained and wouldn't talk much but now I feel I can talk to almost anyone.
Some times things can be tough but most of the time it is really enjoyable and gives me a sense of pride in the role I have. I am also constantly aware that there is always help and assistance whenever I may need it, both regarding to work and personal matters.
My programme has generally been very well organised but until covid some things have changed, been delayed or out right cancelled but this isn't a fault of anyone as most businesses are also under the same pressure due to covid. Things have been put back on track quickly though and there is always a good idea of what's coming in the future.
As mentioned earlier I gain plenty of support and help that is essential to my learning and development. The early careers team are always there to help with matters regarding both personal matters and problems I may be having while at work. They are also there to provide any extra learning that we any require.
I gain plenty of support from my training provider when it comes to qualifications. They constantly remind me that they can get me further support if I ever need it and things such as personal tutor are available. If we have any problems with our education they are always happy to hear them and take action to make things better.
My qualification ensures I am ready and that I have everything I need for when I start full time as a mechanical designer. Everything is checked on a 12 week basis to ensure that our skills are up to scratch and that if any further help is required. This further help ensures I am ready for when I time complete.
Within the first few months I had to attend an outward bound experience. I spent a week away doing activities I wouldn't normally do which boosted my confidence but it also got familiar with the other apprentices as we were constantly working as a team. We are also asked to go and give talks at local schools and events to give younger people an idea of what it would be like to work here.
Yes
The support I have been given throughout my apprenticeship has been incredible. The majority of people are very well spirited and want to help each other to do their best. A role at BAE Systems gives you an incredible start at your career and a great set of qualifications that will be usable anywhere else.
One tip that I could give that I wish I knew myself was don't be afraid to ask questions or talk to other people within the business. It really boosted my confidence and changed my entire way of living as I was more confident to get out there and do stuff. He first few days may be a bit scary as it is such a big business but you won't be the only one and you'll soon settle in after your first week.
