My role is to as a control technician apprentice is to learn the required knowledge to aid within the job. As a first year apprentice, I am currently studying 5 days a week at college to back the training needed on plant through academic and practical examples within classrooms and workshops.
Since starting higher level engineering, the introduction of the practical work required for several units across the course; has been a great insight into the multiple applications of engineering. Currently I am learning how to use a milling machine as well as lathe turning exercises. Although the role is modern and mostly electronic based; having old skills is always useful.
Since leaving 6th form and previously completing two years of an engineering course, the new course include most of the same units and topics. This has made the programme less interesting as I have already seen the majority of work but even so some things have been learned on top of the given lessons.
The programme is well structured through the different types of engineering units found within the course. It allows for different style of learning through a logical and systematic process. Some communication can be vague but on the whole its usually to a high standard and everyone is included through the programme.
Our manager is always contactable in the case of any issue, they go above and beyond to assist us in whatever matter we may be experiencing; both personally and professionally. Regular meetings are arranged to keep everyone involved and engaged in informed about people and events occurring within the company.
Training support within the qualification can be varied within the college that conduct our education. Many of the lectures are fantastic; they go above and beyond the required limit to exceed teaching standards in order to give the best experience as possible. However some don't conduct work the same standard which makes some working difficult.
So far the qualification has been going well, targets have been met and progress is strong. This has given me more confidence to try new tasks and to work within a professional environment.
During my time at work, all of it has been through Covid-19 so no extra activities have been available. This is not the fault of the employer as they are following the guidelines.
Yes
BMW as a company is fantastic, the role is incredibly interesting and brings with it so many skill sets learned through training. The working environment is clean, organized and logical which aids well within an engineering workplace.
Although high grades are important to consider when applying, interesting hobbies, past experiences and knowledge of the business does help during the application stage.
