Aircraft Maintenance Apprentice Review

Hands on experience on maintaining aircraft within British Airways engineering operations. Also carrying out 'in-house' studying towards our 'A-Licence' and NVQ Level 2 and 3. Our roll within the company would be to primarily gain experience and knowledge within the whole engineering operation as we complete our Modules and NVQ qualifications.

I have learned and developed various practical skills such as hand skills in the workshop as well as skills on the shop floor such as leaning how to use manuals effectively and how to carry out certain jobs on the aircraft correctly. I have also developed skills with various bits of tooling that I use on a day to day basis. I have also developed life skills that I use on a every day basis that will aid me in future situations.

I enjoy that every day may be different and I will learn new things on a day to day basis when I am working. I enjoy being able to use and develop my practical skills when carrying out various jobs on the aircraft. It is exciting to carry out jobs on various different types of aircraft and to learn the differences between them.

It is well structured and organised. I move around the workplace on different placements and I get a feel for every part of the company and the different zones when working on the aircraft. I always know where I am meant to be and whom to see on the different days.

The support is good, whenever I have an issue that I would like to discuss; I can always go to speak to someone and get it sorted. I can usually speak to any of my apprenticeship team to discuss certain matters regarding mental wellbeing and my course as a whole.

I receive a fair amount of support, my training provider is in frequent contact with me to see if I am on the right track towards gaining my qualifications. they give me advice on where I should be and how to get there, and, if I have any issues about timings for qualifications and completing the work, I can speak to them and we can usually work out a solution.

it helps me perform better in my role because it gives me a lot of insight into my role and it expands my horizons to learn new things within my role. My qualification is well structured when I am working towards completing it and this helps me gain structured practical experience within my work.

There are opportunities, but we are not so much pushed to do them all the time. They are mainly optional, however we do get contacted on some occasions to get involved and help out with company projects, in which I quite enjoy to be apart off. However, I do wish that there are more opportunities that we can grasp.

It is a very good opportunity to make a long term, stable career out off. It gives you valuable practical experience, great knowledge and lots of life experience to use in ones life. It is a good company to work for as there are many career opportunities that one can take hold off.

You have to have passion in aviation and a love for engineering. You have to be keen, motivated and very hardworking to get through this apprenticeship. you have to be ambitious and be able to come out of your comfort zone to be able to progress and enjoy your time whilst learning and developing new skills.
