1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:

Day-to-day I have used CAD software's to draw/model structures such as Bridges. I have create drawing sheets of these models to present to the client which includes labelled plans, elevations, sections and details of the structure to show more detail and explain parts of the way it will work.

2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?

Since I have started I have learnt a lot about structures, mainly bridges as this is the team I am on. I am becoming better at using CAD, which is mainly microstation. This includes 2D and 3D modelling and labelling things on drawing sheets and knowing how to present things.

3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?

I am enjoying a lot so far as the work I am doing is very interesting and varied. I get to do a range of things which means it isn't boring, and this keeps me focused on the job. Being on real projects with deadlines also adds to the enjoyment.

4. How well organised/structured is your programme?

There is clear structure to what the plan is for me to do. At the start it was a little harder as projects did not pick up pace very well but once I was put on the right project I always have plenty to do, and it is organised for me and by me.

5. How much support do you receive from your employer?

I have a buddy and mentor who are both there for when I need help on anything. This could be about my work, CPD or any issues I may come across. I don't have many issues with not knowing who to contact as everyone has offered their assistance if I am struggling.

6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?

I have not yet started my course as it is starting in September/January. I can not yet comment on this question due to this but so far I have had help on what to look at and I am sure once the start date becomes closer I will hear from them.

7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?

As said previously I have not yet started but I think having more detailed knowledge about civil engineering will massively help. This is because I will understand the fundamentals of the engineering and part of the bridge for example which will make things easy for me when it comes to jobs.

8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)

It is harder at the moment due to COVID-19 lockdowns, but I have been told about several opportunities that Arup have given apprentices in the previous years. They have set up many calls for us so we can connect virtually with our teams and other apprentices that are around the country.

9a. Would you recommend Arup to a friend?

Yes

9b. Why?

Arup have really settled me in well, especially when you consider the fact I have started from home remotely. All of my other colleagues have made sure I am getting on okay throughout and I feel like I know people so well, despite having not yet worked in the office.

10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Arup?

For anyone applying to Arup I would say its good to know what your interests are. It is going to be your job everyday so it is important that you are going to find interest in what you are doing. Also being yourself is key as Arup accepts everyone for who they are.
