  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • I assist the dentist and hygiene during appointments by setting up for procedures and cleaning the surgery afterwards. I also have a role in reception welcoming patients to the door, taking their temperature and asking them to fill out medical history forms. I have duties of cleaning and answering the phone.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • Yes my people skills have improved and have gained more IT knowledge and speed doing this. I have had to learn how the dental databases work and each practice uses a different software for appointments and keeping patient information. My knowledge on confidentiality, safeguarding and mental capacity have improved also.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I like the fact that work carried out is mainly practical and less theory. The theory work I do receive is not overly difficult or over whelming as I struggle with this personally. My team and tutors are very supportive and give a lot of support when I ask for it.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • The course I am doing it supposed to be 18 months however I am flying through my theory work and am ahead of target. My training providers provide a lot of information and updates via email. Sometimes my tutor forgets work assigned or repeats but she is very helpful otherwise.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • I mainly receive help from my employer when I ask for it. The practice manager and principal dentist often ask how I am getting on with my work and they provide help, advice and support when I may be needing it or ask for it. They never deny giving help.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • I receive plenty of help from my provider as there is a website when I can log all my work books onto and there is resources for each unit so I can download any help sheets and access any web links that they recommend. When I ask my tutor for help she emails my extra useful information or calls me to explain.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • Very well as I wouldn’t be able to do this job as a dental nurse without the qualifications I am receiving. Every piece of work I am assign is related to my course and helps me to understand the roles and responsibilities and relevant legislative information that I am required to know.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • No. Not that I am aware of. We have a WhatsApp group for communication and the owner of the dental practice often takes the whole team out for dinners, this mainly happens over Christmas and when new team members join the team as a getting to know each other dinner.

  • 9a. Would you recommend City & Guilds Group to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • The course I am going I have noticed that everything is very uniform and organised. The exams put in place are well prepared and efficient. I have previously completed a City and Guilds Course doing Beauty therapy Level 2 and also found this to be very good in preparation and not overly difficult.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to City & Guilds Group?
  • They are very helpful and useful and not to be worried as they are always willing to provide support if you are struggling or have any extra learning needs or mental health issues. The work is mainly practical and both working environment and provider tutors and nice people and always willing to help.
