  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • On a day to day basis my role involves inputting raw materials into the system and processing them through into a final product. This is carried out on an automated system whereby you start the recipe on the computers in the control room and follow prompts when the recipe needs manual intervention such as opening a valve, taking a sample etc. Alongside this you have to carry out risk assessments such as permits to work and ensure the plant is safe for engineering work.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • Through the apprenticeship I will gain both a City and Guilds and an NVQ qualification relevant to this industry. I have also undergone various training in the workplace in things such as sampling, hoist training and forklift truck training to name a few. I have advanced some skills I already had in things such as teamworking, independent working and organisation. In my role at work I have learnt key skills such as problem solving, critical thinking and have advanced my knowledge in areas like chemistry and process technology.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I enjoy the programme as I have a good team around me both on plant and with the other apprentices and my managers. I have learnt a lot from people around me and people are always happy to help or answer your queries. There is a friendly culture on site which helps with your development.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • The programme has been highly organised from the start when we began with a site induction all the way to end point assessment after 3 years. There are dates set for completion of everything from NVQ to college work to validations and extra training. This organisation gives you goals to work towards and keeps you on top of your work.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • We gain a lot of support from all on site, the apprentice manager always ensures things are running smoothly and will help you out if you are falling behind and give good advice in how to progress further. I also know if I ever have any queries I can drop an email to my manager or even just turn up at his office for assistance.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • My tutors are very helpful both on the NVQ side and that of the City and guilds. I always have a goal set for each month for units to be completed and if I have any queries I can drop them a message any time. They always push you in the right direction.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • What I am learning directly applies to my workplace. I often learn things at college and then spot things in my workplace so what I learn is always reinforced by seeing it in person. I feel I have learnt a lot which is relevant to this industry which I can apply in my day to day role.
