My role as a Project Controls Apprentice has been a great opportunity. Day-to-day, I am responsible for the reporting of various pieces of data. I will take part in 3 different placements throughout the course of the programme. I am involved in operations of a project planner alongside studying for a qualification from the Association of Project Managers.
One of the main skills I have learnt is presentation skills. Early on, National Grid sign the apprentices up for different course and we are given different project that involve giving presentations. Particularly during the early days as an apprentice, you will be enrolled onto lots of different training schemes such as: personal impact & influence, developing a resilient mindset and negotiation skills.
I enjoy the work as an apprentice as I find it requires the right level of technical expertise to push me but to not stress me out. The people at National Grid are very friendly and the culture promotes respect for one another. People are understanding and managers try to ensure their team maintain a healthy work-life balance.
The programme has been extremely organised and I have been very impressed with the induction structure taking place virtually. There is an infinite number of people who I am able to go to for support, either personal or work-related. I am given adequate time within my placement to ensure I can stay up to date with the studying aspect of the programme.
I feel completely supported by many different people around me. Some managers take a more hands-on approach and some allow you to come to them when you need them. Whenever I have had an issue I have felt able to tell someone straight away and I am given further support wherever I need it.
The training provider works very hard to ensure I have what I need to make progress with my studies. I have various meetings throughout the month with the provider as well as homework set to ensure I am consolidating my learning. My educator gives me progress updates so I know where I need to focus my attention.
I have definitely learned applicable knowledge that has assisted my understanding in my placement. The content so far has consisted of general understanding of project management and how organisations are structured. This has helped me understand how different teams interact within the business and I can now identify points of contact for various things.
All new starters are automatically enrolled into a networking community where we have talks and get to know you activities. We also have different volunteering opportunities and activities you have the opportunity to get involved in such as writing articles for the apprenticeship newsletter. I believe there are also lots of sports teams you can sign up to.
Yes
I would recommend National Grid to a friend because the culture of the company is so welcoming and encourages people to celebrate their differences. I think the apprenticeship is very structured and tailored to allow each apprentice to get the most out of the programme and find their best way to work and learn.
I would say the most important thing is to ask questions to discover which apprenticeship is right for you. Get in touch with National Grid to find out what each role entails so you can be sure you are applying for the role you feel the most excitement for. Be yourself at the interview!
