On the substation my tasks include: maintenance activities, investigating equipment failures and determining risk mitigation strategies. At the training centre I develop site specific skills, these include: fitting skills, health and safety courses, and substation equipment courses. At university I study a degree in electrical power engineering.
I have gained confidence throughout my apprenticeship whilst also developing my knowledge of the electricity transmission network. I have also gained both electrical and mechanical fitting skills.
National Grid have supported me throughout my programme and recognised the effort which I have put into my work. I thoroughly enjoy all the different aspects of my apprenticeship!
My training plan is well organised and ensures that I am kept busy.
My employer is very supportive and has ensured that I am aware of the available services if I ever need help.
My training provider is very supportive and encourages me to succeed at my qualification.
My qualification gives me a deeper understanding of the electricity transmission network and relevant concepts. This allows me to perform better on site as I have a greater understanding of the equipment and processes.
I am a member of the 'Women in National Grid' group which allows me to network with others across the company. This group also provides me with support as a female engineer in a predominantly male environment.
