  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • In my role, I am to provide or repair fibre connectivity from telephone exchanges to homes and business'. I receive my jobs daily and they can vary in complexity and location. We generally work in pairs within my role and we are responsible for all safety of ourselves and others while performing our duties.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • Since working with Openreach I have learned a whole new skill set. I now know how to use MS Office products much better. There are new tools and quality of work that i have had to become familiar with regarding my role. My previous employment as a workshop engineer involved a wide range of tools and machines and problem solving which has carried over brilliantly for this new role.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • The in house training at Openreach TEC centres was a little slow at first but after the first week or two I enjoyed it greatly. I had a great group of apprentices alongside me and all the trainers were amazing. The buddying side of it was good to be out seeing what we were learning about in class.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • Honestly, after the TEC centre training was finished, the bulk of the NVQ work didn't really relate to anything i was doing in my role as fibre jointer. But I'm sure that it is relevant to other roles within the company. I only say this because i dont need to make an excel spreadsheet or powerpoint show to help me screw a box to a wall or look on GeoHub to find where my workpoint is. But the programme itself was all good.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • All the support you could ask for. They will help with everything you can imagine. Time off for training, if i needed some extra time to work on my NVQ they would create an absence so i could go home and work. The patch leads and senior engineers were always on hand to help any way they could.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • All the support you could ask for. They will help with everything you can imagine. Time off for training, if i needed some extra time to work on my NVQ they would create an absence so i could go home and work. The patch leads and senior engineers were always on hand to help any way they could. The apprenticeship assessors were always available to call for help and advice, and would call us up to correct us.

  • I feel i have already answered this question.

  • unfortunately the COVID 19 pandemic has stopped all extra curricular activities

  • 9a. Would you recommend BT Group to a friend?
  • Yes


  • 9b. Why?
  • Its a great place to work. It was my brother whom already works for Openreach that suggested I apply. The conditions are great, the pay and pension are competitive and i really like the idea of job security in a large stable company.


  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to BT Group?
  • Just enjoy the training experience and get involved with the team. Don't be a "Geezer" and act as though you know everything already.
