  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • My role as an electrical engineer at Schneider Electric in Leeds involves learning about the different products that are manufactured and tested at Leeds. I also ensure the quality of the electrical design of the products with support from more experienced colleagues. I support production, testing, assembling and supplier quality parts.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I have learnt about electrical switchgear design and how these products are designed for the UK electrical distribution network. I am focused on the power systems, energy management sector of the business. This includes high voltage electrical switchgear design and distribution transformers that are manufactured from Leeds. I have developed my communication and presentation skills whilst been at Schneider Electric.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I enjoy working at learning at Schneider Electric as I'm involved in my cross-team projects and working in a fast paced environment. I am given support from other team members and have regular 1-1's with my manager and technical colleagues to ask questions. There are several benefits at Schneider Electric including the core values that ensure team cooperation.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • My apprenticeship program is structured in such a way that I go to college on day release 1 day per week and go to work the other 4 days per week. During the 4 days at work I learn about the Schneider Electric products, designs and processes and about different departments.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • My employer supports me with the college workload and I have regular meetings with my manager to discuss workload and any concerns. My manager is very approachable and has guidance when I am unsure about how to proceed. Overall all people at the business are very supportable and are nice very approached.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • Leeds City College has given me support for the NVQ and HND qualification. I have regular meetings with senior assessors at the college to discuss my progress in the qualifications. They are very supportive and approachable. Due to COVID all college lessons have now gone online over Google Classroom and this is still ok.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • In some sense what I'm learning at college can be applied to the workplace as it's in the same industry. I am learning at electrical circuits at college and applying this to the workplace as we manufacture high voltage electrical switchgear that are used in the electrical grid which is the biggest circuit.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • Before COVID there were several extra-curricular activities after work. But now because of COVID this has stopped. We also used to have BBQ's at lunch but this is no longer possible. When I'm not working I like to play golf and go bike riding, before COVID we used to have golf days within the business.

  • Yes

  • I would recommend Schneider Electric to a friend as it's a very good company to work for. Been such as large and multinational company there are many opportunities to grow and learn. The company has helped me throughout the college work and learn whilst been at work. The company and my manager are very supportive.


  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Schneider Electric?
  • I would advise anyone who is looking at applying to Schneider Electric to go for it. The company has shown that they are committed to their employees by investing in the future and their people. Schneider Electric is a very large and multinational company that allows people to grow, learn and prosper.
