Nuclear Engineering Degree Apprentice Review

I am currently working in the Asset Management branch of Pre-Operations, with the role of preparing documentation and training to ensure a smooth transition to an operating nuclear site. I have helped create databases for tracking and recording documents, written plant maintenance instructions and am working on a departmental guidance note.

I have learnt skills in communication (especially with working remotely and the introduction of extensive online calls), technical analysis, technical document writing styles and gained knowledge of the industry as well as systems related to the project. It has been challenging, especially working with teams across the project, of varying disciplines.

I enjoy most of the work I do, as well as the training at college. It is great to be able to put my learning into context on the job and it is a privilege to be able to witness the work of various departments within the project and build a bigger picture of the organisation in the process.

It is fairly well structured but flexible at the same time. Communication and consistency is not always flawless but generally help is available where needed. I think the way our company and training providers handled and adapted to the pandemic was fairly smooth and effective and any issues encountered were overcome in a timely manner.

We have a great support network within our employing organisation, with a career manager who remains constant throughout the course, assignment managers who change with every new placement, and an early careers manager who oversees all the apprentices. I have found these layers to our guidance and support very useful and well thought out.

Our college blocks are very intense, as they all happen in 5 week blocks, however our tutors and organisors are very supportive and helpful. At times the communication between employer and training provider lacks slightly, but this has not caused any major issues so far and generally the learning experience is balanced yet challenging.

In some ways the college learning is a little too technical for what is actually needed within the placements, but having a solid foundation of knowledge of the industry and it's related scientific aspects is very useful. It has also heloed to develop my engineering approach which I can then apply to solving problems in the workplace.

Due to the pandemic, I cannot fully answer this question as I have not yet been into the office for a placement! However it seemed that in ordinary times there would be a substantial amount of socialising opportunities, activities and events to get involved with. The culture on site definitely promotes this!

EDF Energy is a very well organised, flexible and innovative company. It has given me so many invaluable opportunities that many would not be exposed to. I like their approach to projects, their general ethos, moral values and promotion of allowing women to feel welcome in a male dominated environment. Definitely would recommend.

I would suggest researching the nuclear industry prior to applying to ensure it is the sector you wish to work in. EDF seem to respond to people with a willingness to learn, a practical mind and good communication. A broad range of interests and skills will also be beneficial, as well as a genuine enthusiasm for the industry.
