Working as a tax associate providing corporation tax compliance and advisory services to a wide variety of clients. Having a portfolio of clients which will encompass different teams. I would review computations and prepare packages that are then reviewed by the senior on the job. for adviosry pieces I would attend calls and help prepare memos/documents.
Professional writing skills from writing client facing emails on a daily basis, writing memos and reports. Delegation skills going into my final years of the program understanding how to pass work onto people on lower levels and managing expectations. Communication skills attending and speaking on client calls and having my own talking points on them.
I found the program hard at first coming straight out of A-Levels it was as if I'd been thrown straight into the deep end. The first couple months took some time to adjust to working life but now looking back on it I don't regret making this decision. The skills and progression I have made whilst working would not be attained at all from going to university I believe and I'm already far ahead of people my age at university that want to come into financial advisory.
Very organised there are clear progression steps and reviews biannually. The programme is clearly outlined when you join, study leave and exams are set out for you with your repsonsibilites clearly stated to you. There are lot of focus by the firm on employee development throughout the course and how they can turn you into a well rounded advisor.
Lots of support, there is study leave provided and additional amounts can be taken if you are stressed. There is a counselling manager assigned to you that will check up on you on a forntightly or weekly basis checking on you to see how your coping with your workload and providing support where needed.
There is quite a lot of support when in college and on courses. There is an online vle portal which has tuition videos and tests provided. The courses sometimes can feel rushed due to the sheer amount of content you have to get through in a short amount of time. But there are lots of resources available.
Well having an ACA qualification makes you stand out in your profession the knowledge gained from doing the qualification helps you understand a lot of aspects in financial advisory. It also prepares you to manage workload whilst revising which is a key skill of time management which can be used in the day-to-day job.
Yes there are is social club which organises events. We have running club that would go out on a lunch time and we have a few football teams that will play interoffice games or in leagues during the week. There are plenty of networking events through the ICAEW with student balls and cocktail nights etc.
Yes
Great culture which is always looking to improve, even though I think there could be changes the people at the top seem to recognise this and are always willing to listen. There's lots of support a good atmosphere and plenty of things to get involved in around the office.
Be confident, be yourself, at the end of the day its a job that requires lots of face to face work so as long as you can show that you can work as part of a team you'll go far. Don't be discouraged by thinking your academic grades are not good enough at the end of the day, they are investing in you as a person not the academic grades on the piece of paper.
