Reviewing client's financial statements to ensure that they are free from material misstatement. On a day-to-day basis I use professional scepticism and perform tests on certain financial statement areas to ensure that they are in line with the appropriate accounting standards. This involves contact with clients and a lot of responsibility
I have gained confidence in myself with having to deal with client's on a day to day basis and developing my knowledge of financial statements. As well as on the job development I have also had exams which have helped me learn new areas for what is required of a chartered accountant.
The programme has been very enjoyable in order to meet new people from a diverse background whilst gaining great friends along the way. The work can also be very challenging which give you a sense of satisfaction once completed. Everyone is very friendly and the social events are also a huge plus
The programme is set out to accommodate for the requirements of the icaew in order to qualify and a professional qualifications team is there to aid in sorting the exams and helping you pass. You are given study leave also to accommodate for the workload and revision needed to pass the exams
Support is received along the way with you receiving a 'buddy' who is also an apprentice, who are there to be a first person of support. You also receive a counselling manager who is a more experienced employee who is available to help at any time. As well as this, everyone in the firm is always willing to help.
BPP have provided support along the way with a scheduled call every 6 months in order to discuss the progress made with the requirements of the qualification and any additional support needed. When studying for exams, there are tutors who are available to help and can be put into contact with. They also have a dedicated BDO email which is specifically for BDO employees.
When studying for exams and working simultaneously, you can notice the information that you have learnt on the course to implement whilst on the job. The financial reporting exams show how financial statements need to be set up and what has to be included, which helps when dealing with client's financial information.
There are virtual social events at the moment due to lockdown restrictions. However pre-covid there was a social event around every 3 months where all the employees could meet and have a drink, which was really fun and great to get to know people on a personal level. There are also sporting teams across different sectors who compete together.
Yes
BDO has a highly regarded reputation across the industry, and you are able to get a lot of experience during the time of the programme. You are given a lot of responsibility which helps develop your business character and your level of competence. Everyone is very friendly and are always willing to help and give you support along the way
Be yourself! On the job you are most likely to be working in a team, and it is always easier to get along with people who are themselves and easy to work with. This is the main tip that I would give to people, as well as working hard and having a positive attitude.
