I am an audit trainee and work as part of the audit team completing statutory audits for companies. Tasks can vary from checking invoices, attending stocktakes, physically verifying assets and speaking to clients.
Since joining BDO my excel skills have improved a lot as they are a vital part of the job. Also communication skills are key as there is a lot of interaction with the clients, verbal and written and I would say I have definitely developed mine since joining.
I really enjoy my job at BDO and although it can be very hard work at times it will be worth it in the end and as you work part of a team there is a lot of interaction with colleagues.
I would say my programme is very well organised and structured. I spend a couple of weeks at college and then a couple of months at work so my time is varied and I can improve my technical knowledge and gain practical experience at the same time.
I receive a lot of support from my employer as they give me allocated time off to study for my exams which I would say was sufficient although revision in your own time is required before exams.
BPP have been very supportive with upcoming exams. There are tutors who email you to check up and give you the chance to ask questions and get advice.
It definitely helps when you know what you're talking about when talking to clients and over the 6 months I have been at BDO I would say my knowledge of accountancy and financial statements have increased a lot and that has a lot to do with studying for my exams.
As we have been in lockdown due to the pandemic since I joined there hasn't been any opportunities to attend any physical social events however there has been many quizzes and virtual activities set up to get involved in as well as charity fundraising activities.
Yes
My job allows me to study for a professional qualification as well as gaining vital work experience at the same time. Everyone I have met here so far are extremely friendly and are willing to help you whenever you get stuck.
Don't be afraid of not knowing anything about accountancy, training is provided and most people have not studied accountancy before. Be prepared to work hard and sometimes overtime in busy season. Be honest at the interview and recognise what your weaknesses are.
