I am a first year audit trainee. My role varies from day to day and I could be doing two very different thing son different days, but generally, I work for different clients, gathering evidence and testing information to verify the financial accounts of these clients. I work with a range of different colleagues in different teams, depending on the client i am working on at that time.
I have developed a whole number of skills during my time on the degree apprenticeship programme so far. For example my independence, communication, teamwork, time management and presentation skills have all improved and developed during my first six months on the job, and I hope to develop them further as I continue.
I do enjoy my programme as it is a job in an area and industry that I am interested in and have a desire to get into and work ibn, hence why I decided to go for the job in the first place. Although the work can be challenging, it is still enjoyable overall.
The programme is clearly structured and organised, allowing me to plan for the future and have a clear idea of the pathway through the programme. I am on a four year course, with exams through that time, allowing me to obtain my professional qualification t the end of that four year period, and therefore complete my apprenticeship.
I receive plenty of support from my employer, starting from before I started my role, and continuing on until now and into the coming years. I have a very supportive and helpful team around me, who are always happy to answer any questions and give me any guidance on different areas of the job, as well as the apprenticeship programme as a whole.
I receive tutoring from my training provider in the form of college classes for some exams. In all exams I take, I have a wide range of learning materials, both online and as physical resources. I also have access to many tutors who I can personally contact with any questions I have about the specific exam I am studying for.
Working towards my qualification is very important in helping me in my day to day work, as it consistently provides me with a deeper knowledge and understanding in many different areas of the role, allowing me to perform better in my role. It also allows me to perform a wider range of tasks as i gain a wider range of knowledge on different key areas.
There is a wide range of extra-curricular available for anyone to get involved with. One common form of is on Yammer, which is effectively a work social media site, in which people can join and post on many different pages, depending on interests, etc. allowing them to connect with people they might not interact with otherwise. There are also other extra-curricular activities available such as social activities, sport teams, etc., however due to the pandemic, I have been unable to get involved in anything like that so far.
Yes
BDO offers a wide range of support to its employees, including apprentices, as they work towards their professional qualification. The role also provides the opportunity to gain chartered accountancy qualification through the ICAEW, so is ideal for anyone looking to go into accounting. Everyone at BDO is very helpful and supportive, making it easier to settle in and improve on the job as you learn.
The best advice I can give for the application process is to do your research on the company before any interviews or assessment days, etc. that you have. That way, you will be well prepared and will know the job you are applying for well, as well as the company that you are applying to join.
