  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • Worked testing software related to smart metering. depending on the day, the type of testing would vary. I would work with a team to complete work on the given set of devices being tested. Would have daily team meetings to discuss work to be completed, along with reports being sent out at the end of each day to report on progress.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I learnt new software testing techniques, and how to use a variety of different programmes and tools such as ALM. I completed the foundation ISTQB, with training courses in order to prepare for such. I also developed skills working in a professional office workspace prior to COVID 19. As well as this I also developed relationships with people in the workspace.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • It was pretty enjoyable. The work itself was slow initially but picked up and got more interesting over time. The team was great to work with for the most part, and the company culture matched. The apprenticeship work added to the work in my role, added to the overall experience. Writing up about the work deepened my understanding and therefore my enjoyment.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • My programme was very well structured. From the initial induction to ongoing support throughout. Clear deadlines were set consistently, and I had consistent support from my Firebrand mentor as well. I was given time to work on my apprenticeship, however there were many instances in which the work being completed in my role did not match the work I was supposed to be learning/doing for my apprenticeship, adding stress

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • I received a good amount of support from my employer. My manager would make sure I got work, and would in most situations attempt to make it fit in with my apprenticeship when possible. I also had a mentor who aided with any problems I had throughout the programme, and was always happy to do so

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • I received a good amount of support towards my qualification from my training provider. For my ISTQB, there was a training course before to prepare. Throughout the entirety of the apprenticeship I had a firebrand mentor who I could always go to for help. They would help both with work and any personal issues if they occurred.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • I feel that because of the completion of my qualification I have a much greater knowledge of my role, and the industry I am in as a whole. Also since the completion of the apprenticeship I feel everything I learnt within the apprenticeship has been put into practise and used day to day in my role.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • I played 7 a side football with a bunch of people from work. This was set up via communications in email. I have been at small company and social events that have been thoroughly enjoyable. There are also a variety of voluntary initiatives that I have got involved with, most supporting charities and/or the local community

  • 9a. Would you recommend CGI to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • Not only is the work entertaining but the community is fantastic. Everyone around is willing to help and are generally good people who all share the same company values. CGI also values you as an individual person, not just an employee; and will attempt to help you with any personal issues that come up.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to CGI?
  • The application process is actually very easy and streamlined. When it comes to the assessment centre, there isn't too much different to be focused on, although I would recommend looking up information about CGI itself, such as what projects they're involved with not only so you have a better idea of the company yourself, but you could show off this knowledge in interviews and/or ask questions based on this information to show them your interest.
