  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • I am a build engineer apprentice for Virgin Media. I basically build, maintain and decommission all the big and interesting tech that are in the Virgin Media hub sites.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • There is so much to learn and I am still learning. Learning about all different kinds of tech and tools. Getting more and more use to working in an office and technical rooms.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I absolutely love my job! I use to work in retail and this is easily a hundred times more fun and less stressful. No longer working 6 days a week for such long hours. Got a proper routine going on now and I got my weekends back. But most importantly... NO MORE CUSTOMERS!

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • The programme is very nicely spread out. There's not too much going on at one time and gives me plenty of time to manage my time and learning.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • There is so much support and content given to you by the company. If you can't find what you're looking for, a simple email to one person, not joking, literally just email one person and they will help pretty much the entire way.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • We have classes/lectures for about a week, around once a month. The trainers do have a wide variety of tools to use to teach us, so I would say the support given is very good. They also get back to you very quickly should you need help outside of training hours.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • The training can be very helpful but it is not always relevant to the job role. It is handy to learn things outside of the business because it can help with other work should you decide to join a different company.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • There are lots of activities outside of work. These things include such as charity events, social activities such as long walks, canoeing. Virgin Media sponsor the Southampton football team so you can go to games as well. There are loads more but the list is too long to go through.

  • 9a. Would you recommend Virgin Media O2 to a friend?
  • Yes


  • 9b. Why?
  • The kind of work you do and the benefits included are easily the most appealing. I've worked for big corporate companies before and they do not come close as to how wonderful and just so nice it is working for Virgin. There are so many different departments you can go for and they really help boost your wages once you prove yourself.


  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Virgin Media O2?
  • Try and get a basic understanding of cable TV and Internet services and how they work. Demonstrate customer service skills and team leading skills. But in general just be yourself and remember, the second happiest people in life are the ones who enjoy their job, hobbies and activities. So if you're into technology, show it to the world and make something happen.
