My role involves checking the specification of customer ordered concrete and ensuring it complies with the standard. This involves checking the workability of fresh concrete as well as the strength of hard concrete over a set period of days. Over time, the role is set to grow with supervisor responsibilities being added in.
I have learned how to properly test the slump of fresh concrete in compliance with the British and Tarmac standard. This also applies to testing the strength of the concrete cubes. I have also learned how to communicate with other people who are different levels within the company as well as customers.
I enjoy the program so much that I look forward to waking up the next day to see what I can learn next. I also look forward to seeing what new challenges and opportunities arise within my day to day role. This is what I would call my ideal job and I enjoy every moment of it.
The structure is really well laid out so that no programs collide. This includes out core skills development group and our university group. The university also works along side my employer to allow them to structure my learning the best so that they work hand in hand so that there is a continual flow of knowledge.
My employer offers plenty of support, giving me any free time I require to complete my studies to the best of my ability. They also have plenty of emotional support as the last year has been very challenging for myself and my partner and Tarmac has supported us along every step.
As stated previously, Tarmac and my university tie in my learning with my day to day working. This allows for my academic knowledge to tie in with my practical knowledge. If there is something I don't i understand, my manager takes the time to explain it to me to ensure that I properly understand what has been said or done.
The knowledge helps me perform better as it gives me different perspectives to look at things from. It also gives me reinforcement in the knowledge that my manager and supervisor gives me. This in turn allows me to perform my work to a higher standard and notice things that may otherwise go unnoticed.
My work offers the opportunity to participate in the Duke of Edinburgh award as a chance to gain an additional qualification. As well as this, we are able to participate in a program called solutions for the planet which gives us a chance to educate young people on some of the issues facing our planet.
Yes
Tarmac offer such a wide variety of opportunities to their staff so if you end up in a role you don't enjoy, they can offer to move you somewhere that more suits you. As well as this, the progression within the company is fantastic as well as the qualifications which they offer.
The tips I would give is just be yourself as Tarmac love those who are just who they are. As well as this, read up on the job you are applying for to get a better understanding as this knowledge can benefit you in the long run. Finally, be confident and take your time with your interview, they are more than happy to spend the time with you.
