  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • On a day-to-day basis, I am in contact with many other colleagues and sub-contractors. I will be making payments, creating reports, and having many different daily interactions both internally and externally, making each day different. I am currently working on the Rail South framework agreement with Network Rail, on the structures team, focusing on bridge replacements and repairs.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • During my time at BAM I have progressed massively in multiple different ways, such as gaining a greater knowledge of excel and the benefits that it can have to making your working life much easier and learning how to deal with different problems that may occur within a working environment.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • So far I have enjoyed my programme with one of the main reasons being that there are so many other apprentices on the same course as you that you get to interact with and meet new people. Everyone at BAM is so welcoming of apprentices and always find time to help you in whatever way you need.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • The BAM apprenticeship programme is a very structured and well-run programme, they are in touch with you consistently before the programme even starts having multiple inductions ensuring that you are ready for when you start. The training and support that you have access to is superb throughout, all members of your team are aware of the course you are own and guide you throughout.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • When at BAM you will have lots of support from your line manager, you will also have support from another quantity surveyor or civil engineer who you will work with on a daily basis and also have access to a mentor who can help yu with both work and non-work advice if you need.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • When on a BAM quantity surveying apprenticeship, you will live and study at Leeds College of Building, where you will gain access to a top-level of education. At Leeds College of Building, all the tutors are so helpful and are all really knowledgeable in the topic that they are teaching.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • Having studied for 9 weeks at Leeds College of Building before starting the working side of the apprenticeship gave me a much better understanding of the industry, which has helped significantly on a day-to-day basis when you start working. Through completing the qualification you learn specific knowledge that is needed for your job role that may be hard to pick up in the working environment.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • At BAM there are multiple company events and activities that are available to you if you would like to participate in them, there are also many social events between site teams when each site finishes along with Christmas dinner every year. You get a volunteering day every year which you can decide how you use to help those who need it most.

  • Yes


  • 9b. Why?
  • I would recommend BAM to a friend as I think it is a great place to start your career, with many senior members of staff within BAM coming through the apprenticeship programme themselves, means that you as a member of whatever team you may be on will be highly valued and supported throughout.


  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to BAM?
  • The two tips that I would give to anybody who may be applying to BAM is to make sure to be yourself throughout the entire process as then you will give a true representation of yourself. The second tip that I would give is to be sociable on the assessment day and get to know the other candidates and to use it as a learning experience.
