I am currently the project lead for a digital project that will involve creating a new online digital portal, an app, as well as a long term social media campaign. The project brief is centred around being innovative and to 'break the mould' with regards to what has gone before.
Although only in my second year of a digital marketing degree apprenticeship I have already gained so many new skills. From understanding and learning industry proven processes and techniques but how to apply them directly to the workplace and share god practice with colleagues across the organisation. Whilst I have been in a digital role for some time it was amazing just how much was to be gained from the apprenticeship.
The degree apprenticeship programme is very challenging and should not be underestimated at all. The workload is a lot greater than had expected but the rewards far outweigh any negatives. The teaching staff at Manchester Met have been fantastic and have been extremely supportive and knowledgable within their specialist areas.
The degree apprenticeship programme in Manchester Met is particularly well structured and careful consideration has really been given to the fact that students are also working full-time jobs as well as commitments such as family etc. The timetable is presented well in advance which also allows for planning so as to make sure that all aspects of life are in order.
My line manager has been very supportive as has the learning and development team within the HR function of the organisation. The fact that I have been able to transfer techniques and knowledge learnt from the programme directly into projects within the workplace has stimulated additional support as the relevance of the programme really has been of benefit to the organisation in such a short period of time.
Manchester Met Uni have been great not only in the various units and topics covered but in also making it relevant to everyone taking part. Of course most students are all from various industry sectors, so doing this really is testament to efforts gone into building and delivering the programme. It has far exceeded my level of expectation.
As detailed previously, on my programme in particular, industry techniques, tools and knowledge is very relevant and has already had a positive impact within my organisation. I know so much more about the industry, despite being a long serving member of staff and just proves that there is so much to be learnt and that it really is about lifelong learning.
There are a number of events and focus groups that can be actively engaged with. We host a number of events and online participation groups as well as internal specialist groups that have again benefitted from the knowledge and skills developed so far from the programme. When I am not working, I am usually found reading journals or academic books relating to my subject area.
Yes
To be at the front end of change to a large demographic area is really inspiring. In particular with my role being involved within skills and apprenticeships it really is about the desire to make positive relevant change and we are given the autonomy to really make a difference on a daily basis.
If you have an interest in local government and really want to work amongst colleagues and peers that are there to serve its residents to the best of their abilities then it is definitely the place to be. With so much change having taken place already and with so much in the pipeline, each day really can be so drastically different to the previous.
