It is my job to set up the surgery at the start of the day, clean down between patients, prepare instruments for the dentist and mix materials such as amalgam and alginate. I have to welcome patients into the practice and ensure they receive the best possible treatment. I may also work on reception.
I have developed my communication skills as you can face a variety of communication barriers which have to be overcome. I also work in a team with many other people, so I have to ensure that I play my part well. As part of my training, I attended a first aid course, where I learnt many new things such as bandaging and slings.
It is extremely engaging as everyday is different. I am constantly learning new things and adapting to meet patients' needs. I love to meet new people, as well as working with someone throughout their entire course of treatment. The theory work is interesting and extremely relevant to my day to day duties.
My programme is clearly split into specific modules and each gives a time scale, so I know where I am expected to be. It is very well organised by the training provider and I receive regular contact and support from my mentor. I am given set work every week to be handed in for the allotted time.
My employer is very helpful in answering any questions and explaining my role to me. They support me by providing time at work to complete my assignments and checking that I understand it. I have regular meetings with my employer to discuss my progress and my future career goals. I feel very well supported.
My training provider provides constant support through online meetings and regular emails. They are happy to answer any questions I may have and ensure that I am happy in the work place. They check that I am being given my allocated off the job training time to complete my assignments at work.
My qualification provides me with the skills and knowledge to perform better in my role. It teaches me about the procedures that are in place to protect me and the patient. I enjoy applying my learning in my role. It gives me an understanding of what is acceptable conduct and what I should do if I feel unsafe.
Yes, there are regular social activities with my colleagues. Everyone loves their job and respects each other equally regardless of job role as we have a high emphasis on team work. Everyone is so kind and supportive and you feel like you can ask anything or express any concerns you have, no matter how small.
Yes
My employer is so supportive and ensures that everyone in the team feels valued and respected. It is amazing to work in a team of people who are passionate about providing care to people and who enjoy coming to work. There is a great atmosphere and everyone is treated equally.
Go for it. Even if you're unsure, just apply and you won't regret it. Apply in an area you are interested in and you will meet loads of other like minded people who are always happy to explain their role to you. There are loads of opportunities to develop skills and progress in your career.
