I assist the dentist with carrying out treatment on patients. I am responsible for the smooth and safe running of my surgery. I am responsible for cleaning and ensuring no cross infection takes place. I keep the decontamination room running well throughout the day and keep on top of sterilising my instruments.
I have learnt a lot of new skills. I didn’t know how to carry out my role as a dental nurse when I first started as I’d never done it before. I have learnt how to nurse and clean correctly and follow all the relevant gudelines that we have to follow.
I enjoy my programme very much. I enjoy the fact the training is on the job and hands on, I feel I learn more this way. I enjoy that I am always learning and there are always opportunities for me to develop and widen my knowledge. I like putting things I have learnt into practice.
My programme is very well organised. I have a meeting with my assessor every 3 to 4 weeks and she sets me homework to do in that time. If I have any issues I can always contact her and she will help me. The exams are structured well as I get plenty of time to revise ahead of them.
I receive a lot of support from my employer. If there is anything I need any help or support with, they will always take the time to talk to me about it. I am given time at work to do my off the job training and coursework that is required of me.
Aspiration training are always sending monthly emails and keeping me up to date with what’s going on. They have many points of contact which I can contact anyone on if I have any issues. My assessor also keeps me updated with any changes in the aspiration training that are relevant to me.
I feel it helps me perform a lot better. The work I am set to do from my assessor always pushes me to find out more and when I go into surgery and put these things into practice, it makes a lot more sense. I feel I am always widening my knowledge.
There aren’t many as we are a very small company but we do have social meet ups, summer parties and Christmas parties through the year. There is a good l support network at my work place and we get on well. We have a staff meeting once a month.
Yes
It’s a great place to learn and develop new skills as well as widen the skills or knowledge you may already have. The support network is great and the team are always super helpful. It’s a very nice environment to work in and the training programme is very supportive.
I’d tell them to have some knowledge on dentistry as some things may be asked in the interview and it is good to know some bits. I’d advise them to research into the roles and responsibilities of a dental nurse so they can ensure that this is the right job for them.
