My day to day role involves the auditing of a variety of companies accounts, including charities, corporate businesses and colleges/academies. As an assistant, I work as part of a larger team to audit the different clients I am working on to ensure that their accounts depict a true and fair view of the companies performance.
Before starting at RSM, I had not done any work around audit and therefore had to learn everything from scratch. Therefore throughout the time that I have currently been with the company, I have learnt a plethora of skills to know how to carry out an audit sufficiently and to the high standard that our clients are expecting from us.
The school leaver apprenticeship programme has been amazing so far. I have thoroughly enjoyed my work and it is interesting to understand how different types of entities work. The people I work with are incredibly nice and have been very welcoming since I first joined and have confirmed that the apprenticeship was the best choice for me for my career progression.
My current programme is a total of 5 years and due to Covid some of the sections to my programme have had to have been delayed. However, RSM have been very accommodating to this and have ensured that I will still qualify in the time frame originally set out when I was offered the job.
We have a dedicated line manager and exam training manager who work together to ensure that if I need any additional support, then this is provided to me me where needed. If I have any queries about my apprenticeship programme, then I am able to ask management and they will ensure that my queries are answered in a timely manner.
I haven't really had much to query about with my training provider other than asking about delays in my training programme due to covid. However, where communication has taken place this has been adequate and they have been able to advise where needed. I also have a quarterly progression call with BPP to discuss my progress in the training programme which has been beneficial.
The exams that are done through my training provider have been helpful as they relate to the day to day work that I carry out. This means they have given me a much better understanding of areas that may not necessarily be covered with work as it may not be relevant to the work that I am currently undertaking but may be useful for future audits.
(Before Covid) We went out for lunch in our department most fridays. We also have an annual sports day with other offices which is a really enjoyable event. Within audit we have an annual audit update where all staff from every office in the country have the opportunity to meet together and discuss their experiences within audit from each level of the chain.

I have had the best experience with RSM and they are very good at helping their staff to manage their work life balance. They provide an excellent opportunity to those who want to get into accounting whether they are a school leaver or whether they are a graduate. I would recommend RSM to anyone of my friends who would be looking to get into accounting or any of the other business opportunities that RSM offers.
Do your research about the company, what services do they provide, what opportunities will they provide to you and look into the training that they provide. Invest as much time as you can into the application process and prove why you would be a great addition to the company and prove why you are enthusiastic about the job that you are applying for.
