  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • My role is as a fibre jointer on the Chief's engineer team, Every day can be different and can change quickly, depending on the needs of the team. One day I could be building joints and splicing them to the network, then the next i could be rodding and roping ready to bring the cables in for the network.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I have learn lots of new skills as this was a career change for myself. I have also been able to build on developing existing skills such as my customer service, as we provide the network to our customers on a daily basis. If we had no customers, then we would have no business o we need to put these at the front of our day to day tasks

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I enjoy that I am working outside and that no 2 days are the same. My days can also change on a regular basis, so the only thing that is consistent is change. This is a good thing as Openreach are constantly striving to be the best as a company and deliver above and beyond.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • It is clear and concise of what is to be expected and the course objectives are laid out clear at the start of the course. This is reviewed at the end of the sessions to make sure learners objectives are met and that their is a level of understanding achieved.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • My employer is supportive in helping me achieve my objectives, I am given time within my working day to complete work that is aimed at completing my apprenticeship. I am given a period of buddying during my learners journey to gain knowledge and experience from my colleagues. My colleagues are supportive in sharing their knowledge and wanting me to work towards the best of my ability, whilst maintaining safety.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • My employer is supportive in working towards my qualifications by giving me time in my working day to help achieve the objectives that are set, and help plan my day to work towards any objectives that are outstanding. They also allow you to work with different individuals to help increase your knowledge base in working towards your qualification

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • My qualification helps me perform better in my job, as it teaches me how to do my job correctly and to the best of my ability. My qualification also teaches me how to do my job safely, which in turn means that I go home to my family in one piece.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • Yes these are available if you go looking for them. The use a software package called Workplace and if you search on there you can find various social events that are being planned for charity events, there are groups available on there that over peoples hobbies and they are able to discuss these with other people in the business.

  • Yes


  • 9b. Why?
  • Openreach are an inclusive and diverse workforce, and make everyone feel welcome and part of the team. I feel that safety is at the forefront of their business which means I go home safely to my family every night. They are an innovative company who want to be leading in their sector in terms of new products and services for their customers.


  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to BT Group?
  • If at first you don't succeed, then try again. This is a good moto to have, as it is a time for you to be able to reflect on what you would do differently next time to help you achieve your goal of working for the company. Be open and honest throughout your journey and don't be afraid to ask for help, there is always someone willing to help you.
