  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • My apprenticeship includes placements all ranging from the time frame of 3 months to 6 months where I get to see and involve myself in different areas of Human Resources. Typically, I am given a project within the placement and I will work on that project throughout my time there in order to deliver an outcome by the end. There are regular team meetings to ensure everyone is doing well and aware of what they need to get done.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • Definitely! My apprenticeship has allowed me to definitely develop my networking skills as I have been given so many opportunities to get to know people all across Transport for London. I also have had opportunities to familiarise myself with excel. I have undertaken internal training courses for the systems we use here at TfL which have been of great benefit. I am also working towards my Level 5 CIPD qualification.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I love it! I am always tasked with work that I know will be of use and be beneficial to the team which is great to see and very motivating. The culture and community here at TfL is absolutely fantastic, everyone is so friendly and it is so easy to get along with anyone you meet. There is never a dull day and I say that with full confidence

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • I started with a corporate induction where I got to meet many amazing people at TfL and hear about their journeys and then I had a HR focused induction where I got to know many of the teams within HR and I finished my induction week feeling like I had a great overview of TfL and HR. I also have one day a week dedicated to my studies, and my qualification where every fortnight I will attend lectures with my tutor.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • The support at TfL is amazing. Everyone will ensure you are doing well, mentally and in terms of work and making sure that you understand your tasks and all you need to get done. There are regular check in meetings within teams, and catch ups amongst my cohort of apprentices and with my line manager too which definitely help when a question needs to be raised or just to have some time to catch up.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • At the beginning of each unit, we are given the assignment brief which helps match what we study during our sessions with where it will fit into the assignment. The tutors spend lots of time making sure we understand the assignment and have enough knowledge to work on it. If concerns do arise, sponsors/line managers always ensure they are raised and resolved as soon as possible

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • A lot of the learning I do part of my qualification, gets me thinking about how these aspects of HR are reflected within TfL. I am able to discuss what I have learnt during my study day with my sponsor. It is easy to see the relevance of what I learn at college.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • There are so many opportunities to get involved in events and groups at TfL. There are many Staff Network Groups at TfL which are dedicated to specific interests/passions/beliefs for example the Womens Staff Network Group which has regular events celebrating things like Women in Rail etc. These network groups allow you to get to know people all around the organisation.

  • 9b. Why?
  • The opportunities to develop yourself and grow here at Transport for London are endless. There are so many support systems in place to assist apprentices on their journey. Additionally, the sense of community that one feels at TfL, they would struggle to find anything even close elsewhere. • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Transport for London?
  • Be yourself! You never want to set up a persona of yourself which you'd find difficult to live up to, so don't downplay yourself and your personality. They want to see YOUR passion and YOUR interest to work at Transport for London. Get to know TfL and everything they have going on.
