  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • On a day to day basis In my role as an openreach engineer, i help to fix faults on customers telephone lines, solve problems by trying to work out where and what the fault is. The main aim to get customers back in service and for them to be happy with the job you have done.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I feel that I have learnt a lot of new skills and definitely always learning more now. I have learnt how to use the electronic equipment such as the hand held testers. I’ve learnt a lot about wires. I’ve also gained a lot of confidence in myself as well.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I have really enjoyed the program so far. I have learnt so much and really feel that I will continue to enjoy this job for many years to come. The training I have received has also been a big part of the journey so far, making it very enjoyable and easy to learn.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • I think it is very well structured because within a few weeks of being on the program I received an email giving me information about all of the future dates that I am required to have a day session to learn more about my apprenticeship and to show my working.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • I think that I receive a lot of support from my employer. There are always multiple people I can contact if ever I need help or support with anything. There are also lots of people you can talk to about things outside of work such as metal health and home life.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • I feel that I get lots of support with working towards my qualifications. I am given time to have the days with my apprenticeship leader to go through my work and also if I need to catch up with anything I am given all the support I need to be able to do that.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • I feel that my qualification helps a lot for me to be able to perform better in my role because it helps me to understand things better by going over learning things again and by taking pictures of my work and explaining what I have done in the situation to fix any faults.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • Yes we do have some extra curricular activities. We are able to have 2-4 paid volunteering days per year to go and volunteer for a charity or something else that would be helpful. We also have our own social media which we can all use to talk and discuss our work.

  • Yes


  • 9b. Why?
  • I feel that openreach has been the best company I’ve worked for. They always support all of their employees, fully provide all equipment you need to a very high standard and the training I have received has been to a very high standard and have enjoyed the job so far in general.


  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to BT Group?
  • The advice I would give to anyone else applying to work at openreach is that you need to be patient with the recruiting process but also to make the most of the training process because a lot is covered and what you put into it you will definitely get out of it.
