  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • A balance between data analysis, using programs such as microsoft excel, project management on transport schemes and projects as well as supporting management, through admin and stakeholder management. The day- to-day differs depending on what placement you in, which last for 6 months. The role includes email and high level report writing

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • Yes, I have improved my technical knowledge around the disciple of transport Planning, including national and local transport policy. I learn learn data analysis skills including EMME transport modelling program and microsoft excel. I have learn project management techniques, in how to deliver a project using the pathway and stakeholder manaagement. My report writing and presentations skills has improved.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I enjoy the diversity between the different placements, which you experience ever 6 months. The range of projects and the contemporary nature of the projects makes the work more interesting. Some of the data analysis programs are difficult to learn, but you are given time to learn at your own pace.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • The structure was clear from the start, except for the length of our contracts and the apprenticeship itself. Communication is clear on where our next placement will be, however this was up in the air due to being furloughed during the pandemic. But we were told quickly of any changes after decisions were made.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • I receive lots of support through access to up to date computer programs and databases for the work I carry out. I also received a home office equipment including a laptop and an office chair. Support is available though my line manager, placement manager and HR. I'm very happy with the support on offer.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • We have weekly blocks dedicated to our college training. We are put up in student accommodation with vouchers and money for food, so that we can visit our college in Leeds. Arrangements were made so that we could continue our college learning remotely through the pandemic. We also have progress meetings with our line manager.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • Learning about Local and nation transport policy such as the equality act 2010 help to understand why we deliver the specific projects in work. We also learn the theory behind transport modelling and different analysis techniques, which can be used in our day job. its also great practice for report writing and presentations.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • yes, there was a lot before the pandemic stopped us form visiting the office, such as 5 a side football and apprentice socials. Now there are a lot of online social groups within my department, such as book clubs. We have a 30 min fortnightly apprentice catch up with all the transport planning apprentices

  • 9a. Would you recommend Transport for London to a friend?
  • Yes


  • 9b. Why?
  • I feel valued as a member of the team. I am able to learn at my own speed and have access to a large range of analysis tools and programs. The opportunity to work in 5 different areas of the business means I can find what role I enjoy and are good at.


  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Transport for London?
  • Be enthusiastic about the role and the opportunity. Enthusiasm is more important that knowledge about transport, which you will learn when you start the role. Be a clear communicator in the group discussions and remember to give other people the opportunity to voice their opinion, to show you can listen too.
