The role varies based on placement rotation. I'm currently working within Line Operations supporting the Train Operations Manager (TOM). I review Train Operator attendance, and support people with returning to work- it's very policy and management focused. I'm also involved in wider, line based projects.
I've gained various internal Operational Licenses and have also attended soft skill courses within the company- such as valuing people. I've hugely developed my people management skills and have learnt the various policies that London Underground follow and how these are implemented.
I love the scheme! The placements span a huge variety of business areas so there's something for everyone. The support TfL offers is incredible; a dedicated placement manager who works within your team alongside your apprentice sponsor. People are friendly and always willing to help.
This is something which has improved throughout the years as some placements weren't initially too structured, but TfL worked on the feedback and have put processes in place to improve this. The support system has always been well structured. The apprenticeship provider has also improved throughout the years.
I couldn't ask for more support from TfL! My line manager is there when I need her and my placement managers have usually been supportive. There's also a dedicated Schemes Mental Health group and Graduate and Apprentice group which can provide support for various issues.
The uni provider has improved throughout the years and have always been quick to respond to any issues that have arisen. However, now I am completing my EPA in the final year, I don't feel that I've been well supported in this.
I would say my job helps with my qualification rather than vice versa as I have been able to use real-life examples within my uni modules. The qualification doesn't really support with my day to day role but it's a niche industry.
Yes! There's numerous staff networking groups which hold various events you can participate in. There's also company and team wide groups such as running clubs. Our internal social media page also has groups promoting different interests- arts & crafts, dogs...you name it!
Yes
The support offered outweighs that which other apprentices seem to receive in other companies. The employee benefits are good, the salary is good and there's a good sense of job satisfaction. The company also works across numerous business areas which provides a range of opportunities.
Apprenticeships are difficult and a big commitment, so be sure it's the right route for you! If you're genuinely interested this will shine through in the recruitment stages- so be yourself. Use LinkedIn to find current apprentices and reach out to speak with them.
