Telecoms engineering, fibre broadband provision, repair and diagnostics. This involves overhead and underground telecoms cable installation, through to termination at the customer premises. For fault finding, I troubleshoot via a process of elimination and using testing equipment.
I have learned a lot of new skills in this role, as I had no previous experience with telecommunications. I have learned how to carry out all aspects of the role safely and efficiently, while being able to overcome challenges. I have developed existing skills such as customer services, and working at height with new and improved methods of working compared to my previous roles
I've really enjoyed this learning journey. There has been so much information to take in and retain, but I have felt well supported throughout. The work is very interesting, with all sorts of challenges to overcome or work around. Colleagues are great too, it's a great environment to learn in.
The programme is extremely well structured and organised. It provides the learner with a step by step journey through the programme, which means that knowledge and skills can be learned at the right time, and allows sufficient time for that knowledge to be absorbed. I've been very impressed so far.
I receive a great deal of support from my employer, and if any additional support is required, it's only a phone call or email away. The whole team have a friendly and helpful attitude and are always willing to help.
All support that is needed is provided, as long as you are willing to apply yourself then there should be no problem at all with regard to receiving support. I've been very impressed with this through my learning journey so far!
The qualification helps me to perform better in my role, because it teaches exactly how to do the job, all aspects of working safely, and about current best working practices.
Yes but due to time studying and on the job, I haven't been able to participate in any of these activities. The staff intranet and other online facilities are available to everybody though, so these are easily accessible.
Yes
Because you receive first class training and are given all of the tools and equipment to carry out your job. The roles within Openreach offer you a challenging but rewarding job with scope for extra training and/or promotion. Overall, most colleagues are genuinely friendly and helpful which makes it a great place to work.
I would advise others applying to Openreach to research the company, and the job role they're applying for thoroughly. Match your existing skills/experience to the role, and highlight these in your application. Focus on customer service, problem solving and technical ability if you are considering an engineering role! Be truthful with all information given in your application.
