My role at the Greater Cambridge Shared Planning Service (employing authority South Cambridgeshire District Council) is that of Section 106 Officer. What this means is that I am responsible for identifying the impact of new development and then, working with third parties (including Parish Councils, the County Council and healthcare bodies), mitigate the impact through onsite infrastructure or more commonly offsite financial contributions. I also have line management responsibilities for the 2 officers whose responsibility it is to monitor the progress of development and raise invoices at the relevant trigger points.
The main applicable skill I have learned at this stage of the course is for a greater sense of self awareness, being more receptive to feedback and recognising where I can improve communication skills.
I enjoy it very much. Although the programme is challenging my tutor is incredibly supportive and the feedback she provides is very constructive.
The programme is organised and I can see how assignments and presentations fit together. I am given time to complete tasks and support is always available. My tutor has adapted well to have to deliver the programme and training in a remote manner due to the pandemic.
My employer generally is very supportive and I am grateful for the opportunity to participate in the programme.
My tutor provides excellent support and feedback on all of the tasks that I complete. Her feedback is always constructive.
My tutor makes sure that I consider how I will apply all of the training and development that I undertake in my actual role. It is clear that the purpose of the programme is to deliver practical improvements to those undertaking the training and my tutor helps me maintain focus in this respect.
Whilst there are some activities I do not actively participate in them.

Providing a public service is rewarding, the Council has ambitious plans and it takes the development of its staff seriously.
Not all Council's are the same. South Cambridgeshire is (or at least is trying to be) quite dynamic with a considerable growth agenda. If change and challenge is not for you, then possibly don't consider South Cambridgeshire.
