As an apprentice, time is split between working in the Warwick office, Aston University and National Grid's training facility in Eakring. Office time allows you to learn more about the company and the University/training time allows you to develop the skills needed to be successful in the industry.
The foundation degree at Aston University is in Power System Management, which focuses on how the electricity transmission network is controlled and operated on a daily basis, and all the theory which underpins this. Combining this learning with National Grid's own training, skills such as problem-solving and leadership are greatly enhanced.
I've really enjoyed the programme, you get lots of support from mentors and managers across the 2 years which makes it a great experience. You get to spend lots of time together with the other apprentices and as a result I've made some friends for life!
The programme is organised really well, all the training is planned well in advance and a timetable of the yearly schedule is sent out at the beginning of the year. This obviously makes it a lot easier to manage time and plan holidays in your own time etc.
The support from the employer is excellent - there are regular team meetings and individual meeting with managers where they ask how you're getting on and if you need any extra support. Literally every person I've met at National Grid is extremely kind and willing to help you.
Aston University offer revision sessions ahead of exams with each of the lecturers, and the majority of lecturers are also good at replying to emails/questions. That being said, there are sometimes issues with the quality of lectures, but National Grid are quick to solve these issues with the Uni.
It definitely does, I've learnt so much from studying at Aston that I can now apply to the work I do in the office. This means it makes it a lot easier to understand and engage with colleagues at work who may be experts in the subject.
There are often social activities organised in each department at National Grid, such as team meals throughout the year and Christmas parties etc. I also believe there are some sport teams that can be joined at the Warwick office.
Yes
I am so glad that I chose to take an apprenticeship with National Grid instead of going to Uni and studying a degree I wasn't even sure I even wanted to do! Its been extremely enjoyable, the company genuinely care for you and you feel well valued - the apprentices have a good name within the company!
Do it. It's an amazing company in an industry that is very safe and stable, and is at the heart of the future transition to net zero carbon emissions. You get payed well and the hours are not excessive, just 37 hours per week. I certainly don't have any regrets.
