On a day to basis, I have to assist senior engineers in the research and development section at Unilever. I receive drawings from the designers and will do my best in order to achieve the vision. I will ask for help when needed but aim to try everything myself first.
Since joining Unilever I have developed not only my engineering skills but my people skills as well. I have been tasked with planning a presentation that will take place on teams, consisting off around 30 people. By doing this, I have developed social skills as well as my communication skills. On the flip side, my mechanical thinking has vastly improved as well as my problem solving skills.
As I have joined from a different external apprenticeship, I thought I knew what I was getting myself into. I was very wrong, I feel valued as an employee as well as being made to feel like an adult and not just an apprentice. I believe I have found my dream job, after being interested in engineering since a young age.
Very organised from a Unilever standpoint. They have given me constant updates regarding my course and what to expect. I believe the communication from the training provided could have been slightly better but due to the pandemic , this is understandable.
I receive full support from my employer, we have frequent teams meetings and chats to discuss my progress. As well as this, they have shown great faith in me from the moment I met with them back in September. By checking up with me and taking an interest in my work, I can see they see me as a valued employee.
I believe the training provider could have been selected a bit better. We have senior engineers expressing concern with the current training provider as we have current apprentices who attend. They can sometimes be a bit slow when it comes to getting in contact, as well as receiving some information.
I have been attending college 1 day a week (some online classes) So it has been hard to learn a great deal from my college. Due to this, I have excelled in my learning when working with my tutor. Seeing the job from start to finish, seeing first hand how something is made, really helps with my learning.
The extra-curricular activities that are available to me are tremendous. We have; football, tennis, geology, gym and many more. Due to the pandemic, these currently aren't running due to social distancing. I think by offering staff a chance to engage in these clubs, will only increase moral and therefore make staff happy to show up each day.
Yes
Unilever have given me a lot of support since joining. They have shown me how much they invest into the apprentices which makes us feel valued. Feeling valued as an employee is very important to me as it makes me want to go to work each day. So for this reason, I would definitely recommend Unilever to a friend.
Be yourself, I noticed during my interview stage they were happy to chat and get to know me. This just made me feel relaxed straight away which I believe benefited me. As well as this, take time to do some research into the company and see some of the great values they stand by.
